Description of the walk

Leave your car in the car park by the chapel in the hamlet of Maissubert, above Chauffayer.

(S/E) Head east along the road to the hamlet of Maisseret, where you’ll join theGR®50, which shares the route with theGRP® Tour du Vieux Chaillol. Turn right onto this path to reach a crossroads.

(1) Turn left onto the road, rejoin theGR® and at the next junction (altitude 1150m) turn left to follow the road to the hamlet of Mallarua (1.2km of tarmac road from the car park).
Just past the old bread oven, turn right onto the track towards Lac de Ruaffan, for 2 km.
At an altitude of 1,450 m, you will reach another junction.

(2) Take the path on the left, leaving the track, and 250m further on, you will reach a cairn on your right.
indicating the new direction.

(3) Take the path that climbs to the right through the forest.
Begin an ascent via tighter hairpin bends which soon becomes more difficult. Vegetation has overgrown the path and it is impossible to see where to place your feet. A Red Circle on a dead tree confirms that you are heading in the right direction (approx. 1650m).

(4) Continue along this track where there is less vegetation, but keep a close eye out for the path at all times.
Reach an altitude of 1,750 metres.

(5) Turn left; red markings on a rock indicate the correct path (see photo). Above all, do not be tempted by a path that branches off to the right and disappears a little further on.
Reach an altitude of 1,875 metres and rejoin the path crossing the Cirque de Larcisse; reach it by keeping to the right at the 1,956-metre mark.

(6) Continue along this path; be careful as it is poorly marked and requires constant attention.
Cross a slightly less rugged section to reach the spot known locally as ‘the waterfall’.

(7) Look out for the Red Circles indicating the correct route, and continue the difficult descent over a drop of approximately 200 metres.

(8) You will then come to a better-maintained path which, at an altitude of 1,500 m, joins the Lac de Roaffan trail.

(9) Turn left for about 80 metres to reach another junction.

(10) Turn right onto the path leading back to the start.

(1) Follow the outward route back to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

I did this hike six or seven years ago; at the time, the paths were well-maintained. That is no longer the case today, as few people venture there. It is essential to set off with a GPS and to be well-equipped.
Crossing the cirque requires constant vigilance. Only undertake this hike when the streams are dry. (See description No. 6)

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A particularly memorable descent due to its technical nature, but entirely feasible. The end of the route requires you to remain alert to stay on the path and avoid slipping (so take it slowly).
Very beautiful views. There are blueberries near the highest point.

Thanks to the author of this walk. The guide is very well put together. You really need to follow it to the letter. We got a bit lost twice, nothing serious, but simply due to a lack of attention. This path is clearly very little used. We did it in mid-August, with tall vegetation that sometimes completely covered the path. You have to watch your step all the time; the path is obscured by the grass in many places. There are no markings (Red Circles? overturned cairns), but the guidebook’s description is spot on. It’s incredibly beautiful, wild and magnificent. The descent is well worth the effort: the path takes you through some unlikely spots. It remains very manageable, as long as you stay on the path. Off the path, there’s no way out, so you’ve got to stick to it – no problem.
You simply must walk this trail, otherwise it will be lost and disappear...
Thanks once again to the author.

A hike I’d highly recommend – the route is perfectly signposted. Just a quick note about the descent in the final section: at the last cairn on the steep slope, take the path on the right through the gully of an old watercourse. Despite having to do a bit of route-finding, the hike is absolutely brilliant. Thank you for the great experience.

Hello
This route is well outside the boundaries of the Ecrins National Park

I don’t have the answer for your dog; please ring the park and mention that the hike takes place beneath the Banc du Peyron ridge and the Moussière ridges above Les Costes.
That way, you’ll know if your dog can join you on this hike.
Enjoy the walk.

Hello,
Your route looks wonderful and I’m very tempted to try it. However, as I’m hiking with my dog, I’d like to know whether the route is already within the Parc des Ecrins or not. Could you please let me know?
Thanks in advance!
Marie C.

Hike on 2 June 2019:
- Caution after point 6: there is another stream where the steep snowfield is still very much present in the shade of the rocks, so you must tread carefully in the snow as there is a high risk of slipping vertically... downwards. Having something to hold on to, such as an ice axe or crampons, might not be a bad idea if the surface snow has not settled.
- The GPS is indeed useful on the descent

Hello,
I haven’t done the walk myself, but I saw it on Visorando. I recommended it to a friend who’s a keen walker, who’d spotted it on an IGN map. She did it in early September in fine weather.
According to her, it’s very steep in the second half and, above all, the path disappears into the mid-height vegetation. That said, it’s well worth it thanks to the magnificent view.
Thanks for the route maps.
