The Breil and Moulin de la Corbonnais route in Epiniac

A short, peaceful walk near Epiniac. It takes you along some pleasant sunken lanes that are passable in almost all seasons and not too difficult. Here and there you’ll find listed buildings. It’s not impossible to come across a herd of wild boars in the undergrowth, especially during the hunting season! So be careful.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the junction of Rue des Douets des Roches and the D10 (Rue de la Mairie).

(S/E) Cross at the pedestrian crossing, head straight ahead and pass an old bakery. Take the first street on the right, then turn right again about 50 metres further on, towards the Résidence des Châtaigniers.

(1) At the bend, take the path opposite which leads into the woods and follow it until you reach a road. Follow it to the right until you reach the D10.

(2) Cross very carefully: there is no pedestrian crossing. Head straight ahead and, after about 60 metres, turn left to cross the Chauchix Vert housing estate and return to the D10. Cross it again with the same caution and take the grassy path opposite which climbs up to a small crossroads.

(3) Turn right to return once more to the D10. To do so, take a small lane on the right.

(4) Cross carefully and take the road opposite to leave Le Breil. At a place called Les Chalonges, the road becomes a path. Follow it, keeping to the left, passing the Moulin de la Corbonnais on the right to reach a road. Keep left at the Les Mottes junction to rejoin the D10 once more.

(5) Cross with the same care, head left for about 120 m and turn right onto the tree-lined uphill path. At the Haut Rayer farm, turn left to reach a crossroads you passed on the way out.

(3) Head straight on and follow the same route as on the way out until the second junction with the D10.

(2) Cross back over carefully and continue along the road.

(6) After the fork, at a place called Les Baluais, take the dirt track on the left, which climbs slightly. The track leads onto a farm track; follow this to the right for about 80 m, then take the path on the left and join the D85.

(7) Follow the D85 to the right, passing in front of the Croix du Coucou, and take the lane “les Pré Herqué” on the left, heading downhill, to return to the D85 at the sign marking the exit from the village. Go downhill to the right, leaving the church on your right, then, at the D10, turn left. Walk past the town hall and return to the starting point (S/E).

Take care at road crossings and exercise caution when walking alongside roads, even if there appears to be little traffic.

Chauchix: soil rich in lime, green no doubt due to the grass.

Worth a visit

Epiniac Church: bas-relief listed as a historic monument
The ‘Le Diable’ family, who lived at the Château de la Higourdais, are said to have donated a bas-relief depicting the Death of the Virgin to the parish. It can be seen beneath the altar of the Blessed Virgin.

The so-called ‘Cuckoo’ Cross
Mission cross erected in 1884 during an evangelisation campaign, as was often the case. Missions took place every five years and usually concluded with the erection of a cross. There are 18 wayside crosses in the parish.

The wash house
Located on Rue des Douets des Roches, opposite number 7. ‘Douet’ means ‘wash house’ in Gallo. A restored wash house with a beautiful timber frame and a roof designed to collect rainwater. A fine wooden pump stands by the nearby well.
