Circular Belle Noë in Épiniac

A gentle walk north of Epiniac. It winds through the woods around the village, along pleasant paths with no particular difficulty.
The route can be muddy between November and March but is not flooded. The area is rich in wildlife; you may occasionally encounter a herd of wild boar in the undergrowth, especially during the hunting season! So please take care.

Description of the walk

Start at the junction of Rue des Douets des Roches and the D10.

(S/E) Head straight ahead and pass an old bakery. Take the first street on the right, then the second one on the right again towards the Résidence des Châtaigniers. Continue along the path opposite, which leads into the woods, and follow it until you reach a road. Turn right onto it and follow it to the D10.

(1) Cross the D10 carefully; after about 60 metres, take Rue le Chauchix Vert on the left. This rejoins the D10. Cross it and head up the grassy path opposite.

(2) At the crossroads, keep right to rejoin the D10 once more.

(3) Cross it carefully, taking a right-left turn. Continue to the hamlet of Les Chalonges, pass the house and go to the junction of the paths.

(4) Take the path on the right which crosses over the Ruisseau de la Corbonnais and then turns northwards. The path runs along the edge of the woods before reaching a road at the hamlet known as La Lande de Chadeville.

(5) Turn right onto the road. When you reach the D4, turn left then right towards the house. At the gate, take the path that runs alongside the property.

(6) At a place called Haute Lande, turn right, pass the Manoir de la Belle Noë on your right and continue to the level crossing.

(7) Do not cross it, but take the road on the right. It becomes a path after about 300 metres. It joins a road.

(8) Leave the railway bridge on your left. Continue along the road to the right for about sixty metres and take the dirt track on the right. The path zigzags before heading straight south and joining a small road.

(9) Cross it and continue along the path straight ahead, slightly to the left. Continue to the next road. Again, continue straight ahead, slightly to the left. The path crosses a small housing estate.

(10) It comes out onto Rue du Domaine. Follow it straight ahead to join the D4. Turn left onto it and go straight on to reach the village centre. Pass the wash house and its pump. The starting point is about a hundred metres away (S/E).

Worth a visit

Epiniac Church: bas-relief listed as a historic monument
The ‘Le Diable’ family, who lived at the Château de la Higourdais, is said to have donated a bas-relief depicting the Death of the Virgin to the parish. It can be seen beneath the altar of the Blessed Virgin.

The so-called Coucou Cross
On the road towards Cuguen. A mission cross erected in 1884 during an evangelisation campaign, as was often the case. Missions took place every five years and usually concluded with the erection of a cross.
There are 18 wayside crosses in the parish.

The wash house
Located on Rue des Douets des Roches, near number 7 (douet means wash house in Gallo). A restored wash house with a beautiful timber frame and a roof designed to collect rainwater. A lovely wooden pump stands by the nearby well.
