The Saint-Apôtre route

A lovely circular walk that takes you to the top of the Bois de Saint-Apôtre, between two valleys with a beautiful view of Aspres on one side and La Faurie on the other. Most of the walk is through woodland and therefore sheltered from the heat: ideal in the height of summer.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Start from the Aspres-sur-Buech Tourist Office at the bottom of the village. Leave the Tourist Office behind you and walk up Avenue de la Gare towards the Route de Sisteron.

(1) Cross it and take Rue des Jardins on the left. At the end of this street, take Route de Valence on the right and follow it for 500m.

(2) Turn right to walk up the street between the housing estates (Chemin de Saint-Apôtre)

(3) Continue along a path that enters the forest. The climb through the forest is quite steep. The path is overgrown at the start (long trousers recommended) but eventually clears out. From time to time, clearings offer views of the village below. Follow the well-marked path, which climbs quite steeply with hairpin bends towards the end. This leads to the Col de Marjariès (picnic tables).

(4) Turn right onto the track leading up to the summit. Ignore a small path branching off to the right and follow the wide track to the left. Continue to the antennas.

(5) Continue straight on (east) along the ridge. The view is splendid on both sides. Descend at a brisk pace to reach the Col de Seille.

(6) Turn right towards Aspres for the return journey. The forest path is very pleasant and descends gently to the village. A tricky (slippery) section on the right bank of the Ravin des Combes does, however, require caution. Continue to follow the path as it takes you closer to the village.

(7) Pass the holiday camp on your left and continue along the path to the entrance to the village.

(8) Continue along the road and turn right with it. You’ll come out onto the D1075; follow it to the right.

(1) Turn left to return to the Tourist Office (S/E).

A lovely route, particularly along the ridges with superb 360° views; best undertaken between April and June, avoiding windy days to make the most of the summit.
The climb up from the north-west of Aspres is quite steep and long, as is the descent along the ridges towards the Col de Seille.
After this recce, I decided to take my group northwards from the village of Seille, then on to the Col de Seille, the ridges, the Col de Marjariès (picnic whilst descending slightly towards a table in a lovely sunny spot) and then a gentle return to Seille via the track (200m less elevation gain) ;-)

Follow the yellow trail. Beautiful autumn colours, but the descent is slippery.

Hello,
I’ve just done this route again, having not done it for four years. As mentioned in gfeller’s comment, the route is no longer the same. I can confirm these changes. I suggest the author of the guide contacts me via private message to give me an email address so that I can send them my GPS track from today’s outing and they can update the route on the guide.
Bonus: when leaving the Tourist Office, if you turn right (Route de Grenoble) then immediately left before the stream and head up the ‘grande rue’, you can fully enjoy the old village.

A few important corrections and clarifications regarding this route:
1) The route is a PR trail, marked in yellow, which you should follow in its entirety.
2) After point 3 (forest track), turn left and follow the PR (not shown on the IGN map). The direct route described (shown on the IGN map) is very steep, challenging and poorly cleared. It is no longer used.
3) At point 4 (Col de Marjariès), follow the track for about twenty metres and turn right towards the ridges. The PR mark on a tree on the left is barely visible. The route along the ridges is more pleasant than the track
4) At the end of the route, in the marl, the route has been altered to avoid eroded and slippery sections. PR markings and cairns
