Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Madone de Prompt-Secours site.

(S/E) Facing the Madonna, take the dirt track between the car park and the stadium at the “Madone” signpost and follow the sign for “Les Sablières” heading due west. Cross the Route du Goutet and continue straight ahead onto Chemin des Sablières, keeping in the same direction until you reach a junction opposite the gate of a property.

(1) Turn left and follow the path which branches off to the right and leads to a bend in a small road near Montplan.

(2) At the junction with the dead-end road, turn left and head towards a crossroads.

(3) At the cross, cross the road to take the “Le Goutet” path opposite (cross on the left). Follow this path south-eastwards, pass under a power line, skirt the Bois Sarna and join a cross-path.

(4) Turn right. At the next junction, turn left, then cross the bridge over the Trambouzan stream to reach Impasse du Moulin; follow this until you reach a fork. Continue until you reach a bend in the Route de Coutouvre (D49).

(5) Cross the Route de Coutouvre and continue straight ahead onto the Chemin d'Armont. At the next junction, turn right to visit the Notre-Dame Chapel.

(6) Turn back and return to the junction, head right then right again, pass the hamlet of Le Coteau and arrive at a junction with Impasse Cordonnier.

(7) Turn left into the cul-de-sac, pass the hamlet of Chez Cordonnier and continue along the circular path which leads to Trambouzan.

(8) Cross the river and head up to the hamlet of La Chaveronderie.

(9) Follow the road ahead to reach the hamlet of Montchanin.

(10) Opposite Chemin du Plat, turn left onto the path signposted “VTT” and descend into the Trambouzan valley to the “la Rivière” marker.

(11) Turn right heading due north, cross the Route de Montagny and take the path opposite leading to Martoret.

(12) Before the cross, take the path on the left, continuing northwards, and head for the hamlet of La Toradière.

(13) Turn right onto Chemin de Machuron and then left to return to the statue of the Virgin Mary and the car park at the Madone de Prompt-Secours site (S/E).

A pleasant walk, but best avoided in hot weather: there are sections with no shade and on small tarmac roads, for example from point 5 to Chez Cordonnier after point 7, from La Chaveronderie (point 9) to Montchanin (point 10), and from Martoret (point 12) to the finish.
Otherwise, the scenery is idyllic, and there is little or no traffic on the small roads.
Do visit the chapel at point 6 (closed, a shame).
At the finish, climb up to the tower of the Chapel of La Madone, with an orientation table at the top; the spiral staircase is very narrow and can accommodate a maximum of 2 (or 3) people, as there is little space at the top.
Distance and duration as described (at a leisurely pace).
Enjoy the walk.

We walked the southern section of this route on 27 March 2026. In other words, we completed a circular route connecting point 11, where we had parked (a place known as ‘La Rivière’), to point 4 as described in the guide.

This made for a 5.8 km circular route through the Trambouzan valley and across the Armont plateau, Le Coteau and Chez Cordonnier.

Very interesting panoramic and scenic views.
Interesting walks along the Trambouzan.
However, the settlement is very scattered, with tarmac roads leading to every house, every farm and every hamlet.
A rural landscape typical of a cattle-farming region, with a few old oak trees marking the sites of former hedgerows, now replaced by barbed-wire fences. No restoration of the hedgerow landscape with new plantings of shrubs and young trees.
The small woods along the Trambouzan are being overtaken by conifers.
A touch of rural heritage: the farm at La Chaveronderie, houses on the banks of the Trambouzan at La Goutte, the chapel and castle at Armont, the well at Chez Cordonnier...
