Le Chêne Girault from Saint-Hippolyte

Leaving Saint-Hippolyte, you set off on a short loop through the countryside. After a short stretch beside the Indre, you'll wind your way through the fields to discover a number of hamlets, as well as the woods overlooking the village.

Description of the walk

Departure from Rue du Stade. Parking available at the stadium.

Signs: Blue

(S/E) On leaving the stadium car park, turn left onto the D92 towards Saint-Cyran and Châtillon. At the Gallicherie crossroads, turn right, then right again at the three-way junction, passing the Moulin de Lège.

(1) Follow the road to the crossroads and continue straight ahead on this road to pass below the village. You will come to a crossroads.

(2) Take the track opposite and continue straight ahead until you reach the intersection with a road.

(3) Follow the road to the left, then take the first track on the right. Follow it until it intersects with a road.

(4) Turn left down into the hamlet of Rigny and turn right at the crossroads. Leave the road before the shed and take the first path on the right that leads up into the woods. Follow it to the left, then to the right, and finally straight on until you reach a road.

(5) At the junction, continue along the road to the left, then turn onto the second track on the right. Follow it as it forks to the right and continue straight on until it intersects with another road and the chemin de la ferme de la Haute Jarnière.

(6) Continue on the track opposite until you reach the road to the Haute Jarnière farm.

(7) At the junction, turn right onto the road, then, after the hamlet, turn right onto the small road towards Basse Jarnière. At the bend in the road, take the path on the left down towards the village.

(8) At the cemetery crossroads, turn left into Rue du Château, then left again into Rue de la Nouelle. Go back up this road and continue along it until you reach a road. Follow the road to the right down towards the stadium and your starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Cyclo-Bohème (formerly Indre à Vélo).
For something different, don't hesitate to put down your hiking boots and hop on a bike! The Cyclo-Bohème passes through Saint-Hippolyte, taking you from Bréhémont to the source of the Indre in the Berry region on a fully signposted cycle route.

The Château de Saint-Germain.
This castle, built between the 15th and 17th centuries, dominates the Indre valley with its two round towers and square keep. Peace talks were held here in 1575 between Catherine de Médicis and her son François, Duke of Alençon, to put an end to the5th War of Religion. These discussions led to the fragile "Peace of Beaulieu", which lasted just a few months... Open in July and August by appointment.

To walk further...
From Saint-Hippolyte, you can also follow the circuit : De gués en prés (14.8 km - yellow signposting). Several local loops are also signposted; further information is available from the Mairie.
