Robert's Castle

This route is suitable for experienced hikers as there are significant elevation changes and it can sometimes be difficult to find your way through the maze of forest paths in the Londe Forest.
The GPX track and app will be useful.

Along the way, you will discover the ruins of Robert the Devil's Castle, part of the imposing Londe Rouvray National Forest, the Dix-Sept Piles Viaduct, the Gothic church of Moulineaux and a pretty view of one of the meanders of the Seine.

Description of the walk

Park near the war memorial on Rue Pierre Gosselin (near the ruins of Robert the Devil's Castle).

(S/E) With your back to the war memorial, head towards the motorway bridge.
Turn right just before the bridge to admire the ruins of Robert the Devil's castle. Access is free, but be aware of the site's opening hours (check online).

(1) After visiting the ruins, retrace your steps and turn right to pass under the motorway bridge. A little further on, turn right onto Route Forestière du Château Robert. Follow this road for 600 metres.

(2) At Carrefour Robert, turn left. Pass under a railway bridge, then continue to the left. 500 m further on, pass under another railway bridge and continue on the same road.

(3) Pass under the 17-pillar viaduct (made of red Infreville bricks) and turn left at the foot of it. The path runs alongside the viaduct, then climbs into the forest. At the top, turn right, then right again to follow the old railway line. Continue for 100 metres after the railway bridge.

(4) Turn right onto the forest path (marked by an old concrete marker). Follow this path to the end, then continue on the path opposite. Ignore a path that climbs to the left and continue for about 400 metres until you reach a small bridge with metal railings (be careful not to go past it).

(5) At this small bridge, leave the path by going around the left-hand railing. Now take theGR®2. Go up this path, turning left. At the next junction, take thesecond path on the right to continue following theGR®2. After a steep hill, continue to a small tarmac road. Take a few steps to the right, then follow the path on the left that leads into the woods. At the end of the path, turn right, still on theGR®, towards Mare Lecomte.

(6) 20 metres before the tarmac road, continue left on theGR®2(note that the entrance to the path is not very visible). Go down a steep slope and, at the bottom, follow the forest path on the left. Continue along this path for 1.8 km until you reach the Hêtre à l'Image crossroads.

(7) At this crossroads, turn left and then immediately left again onto the path that climbs through the undergrowth. At the end of the path, opposite, there is a gate overgrown with vegetation. A passage to the right of the gate leads to the old railway line. Cross the tracks and follow the path opposite. This descends to the Route Forestière du Mont à la Chèvre. Turn left onto this road. Pass thefirst path on the left, then a few metres further on, at the Carrefour du Mont à la Chèvre, turn left. In the large right-hand bend, pass in front of the memorial, then go under the railway line.

(8) At the Carrefour des Viaducs, take thesecond tarmac road on the left. Cross the D64 and continue on the tarmac road that climbs opposite. At the crossroads, turn left, then right to pass under the A13 motorway. Continue for about 100 m after the tunnel under the motorway.

(9) Follow the road to the left. A few metres further on, at the fork in the road, take the road opposite and descend to the D 67a departmental road. Take this road to the left for 100 metres, then take thefirst street on the right (Avenue Jean de la Varende). Continue straight on until you reach the road (D3).

(10) Turn left and go up the D3. 500 m after the church, take the Chemin des Fontaines on the left. At the entrance to the woods, follow the GR 2 which goes up opposite, then turn left at the road to return to the starting point (S/E).

A magnificent beech forest. Very pleasant at this time of year in spring and during dry weather. The paths are passable up to point 9. After that, it was impossible to follow the marked route – brambles, fallen trees, etc.
We continued via some rather tricky detours to reach the village of Moulineaux.

Luckily we had the app and could check our position from time to time, especially at the end where a junction was nowhere to be found. We ended up going off-road and cutting through the steep woods towards the road to avoid skirting the motorway.
Once on this road, we continued on the left-hand road, without going back down towards the village.
There are some very pretty trees in this forest where we only met 2 people.

After point 9, it's a disaster, so at point 9, turn left and follow the A13 motorway for a while.
A lovely springtime walk with a group of retired walkers.

The path at point 9 is indeed impossible to find, the alternative being to follow the path along the motorway, but be careful as many trees have fallen across the path. This takes you directly to Château Robert le Diable without going down to Moulineau.
It's still a nice route, which took us 3 hours.

You quickly leave the noise of the motorway behind and are accompanied for much of the route by the sound of motocross bikes. The numerous bumps attract mountain bikes (which are quiet and respectful) and motorbikes, unfortunately. Avoid this route if you are looking for peace and quiet.
It's a shame because the route itself is interesting.

At (9) I couldn't find the fork in the road, so I went through the forest, along a steep path, to get back to the road.

A pleasant forest walk.

The map is very clear, but as there are many paths in this area and they are not always well marked, I would not recommend this walk to inexperienced walkers.

There is also a slight difficulty at point 9, as I was unable to follow the route on the map.
As the descent to the village is not essential, it is possible to cut through the woods to return to the starting point, but be aware that you will be walking alongside the motorway for part of the way.

Beautiful hike in the middle of the forest with significant elevation changes that make this hike challenging. At point 6, there is a table and bench for picnics. Difficult to find despite a good description. At point 9, I never found the fork in the path. After the tunnel, I took the path on the left and turned left again 50 metres further on, which brought me back to Avenue Jean de Varenne. Longer. A hike to be done again.
