Hauteurs du Revermont from Treffort

Starting from the picturesque medieval village of Treffort, I suggest a lovely route through Revermont, taking in a few viewpoints along the way. The main difficulty is the length of the route: see the Practical Information section.

Description of the walk

Author's update on 20/03/2025: minor adjustments to the route in the Treffort area

Start the route from Place du Champ de Foire in Treffort: parking spaces available.

(S/E) Join the D3, turn left, then turn right at the corner of the Post Office and follow the Meillonnas road for about 100 metres. Then veer slightly to the left onto Chemin de l'Orme and continue to an intersection with directional signs.

(1) Continue straight ahead, following the signs for "Mont Plantaglay - Belvédère," until you reach another intersection.

(2) Turn left towards the Grotte des Fées. Follow the uphill path and you will reach a first beautiful viewpoint. Continue straight ahead, leave a path on your right, then take the path on your left indicated by a sign. A few steps lead you quickly to the modestly sized Grotte des Fées.

(3) Retrace your steps and continue along the path, turning left. You will come to a fork at the edge of the forest.

(4) Turn left towards Mont Grillerin and you will come to a three-way junction.

(5) Continue to the right, keeping towards Mont Grillerin, then follow a path downhill over a few steep slopes. Once you reach a meadow, turn right and cross a wooded area.

(6) Just after passing through a gate, follow a path on the left that runs along the edge of a meadow: there are no signs. After about 100 metres, you will reach the GR®59 trail. Continue straight ahead towards Mont Grillerin (viewpoint). Continue along fairly open terrain with lovely views before reaching an electricity pylon.

(7) Turn right towards Col de la Croix des Angoulures. Further down, follow a wider path to the left until you reach the D3 and follow it for a few metres to the left to arrive at the car park.

(8) Cross the RD3 road with caution, then continue straight ahead towards Col des Justices (GR® markings). A few dozen metres further on, turn right onto a path towards the Catabane ridge (yellow markings).

(9) After an uphill section, the route continues along a long ridge with some nice views. A little further on, continue left at an intersection towards Col des Justices.

(10) Turn right downhill towards Château de Rosy. After reaching a path, continue straight ahead on a slightly rutted trail. Find the path again and follow it to the left until you reach the road, opposite a small car park.

(11) Continue left towards the château (a lovely spot), then fairly quickly turn right onto the path going uphill. Enter a large meadow, taking care to close the gate behind you. Keep going in the same direction for a long time until you reach an unnamed pass in open terrain.

(12) Turn left, join the GR®59, then follow it to the left until the next intersection. Continue straight ahead towards the Chapelle de Montfort, leaving the GR®.

(13) After passing the pretty restored chapel (restored between 1973 and 2009), continue to the right towards the ruins of Montfort Castle, then follow a fairly steep path: two lengths of rope are provided to help you climb.

(14) At the top of the hill, turn left: once at the foot of the castle ruins, you can either climb straight up or go around to the right (easier route). After spending some time there, continue southwards along the downhill path, ignoring a path on your left. Continue downhill until you reach a path that follows the GRP®°°®°° Tour du Revermont: yellow and red markings.

(15) Follow it to the right towards the village of Cuisiat, which you will reach in a short time. Then follow Rue de Montfort to the left, then Rue Principale. You will reach the church and the town hall.

(16) Continue straight ahead for about 500 metres, then at an intersection, keep left to follow Rue du Vieux Village. Shortly after passing the cemetery, you will reach an intersection.

(17) Continue straight ahead towards Crête de Montel (viewpoint), staying on the GRP®. Immediately afterwards, turn right and then left.

(18) At the Y-junction, continue left towards Crête de Montel. Continue until you reach a three-way junction.

(19) Continue on the right branch towards the viewpoint on a slightly steep path. After a short rough section overlooking a small cliff (caution), you will reach a relatively open area with some beautiful views. Continue along the route, taking a fairly steep descent leading to a crossroads.

(20) Follow it to the right towards Treffort, which you will reach at the castle. Go around it on the right.

(21) Then turn left, then veer left at the small square to reach the Church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption. Then follow Rue du Bon Gravier to its end, where it joins Grande Rue. Head straight towards the Town Hall, then turn left to return to Place du Champ de Foire (S/E).

Notes

The starting point can be viewed on Google Maps (aerial view): click here.

We recommend wearing good walking shoes and carrying walking sticks.

Take your rubbish with you, nature cannot digest it.

Please note that I initially planned to do the route between Col de la Justice (10) and Chapelle de Montfort via the GR®59 trail. I decided against it because it is of limited interest, offering no views on a relatively long, fairly straight route. This is therefore an alternative route and it is up to you to decide.

Below is a difficulty rating for each section (a route is not uniform):
- green: fairly easy going with no significant elevation changes or difficulties.
- Blue: steeper slopes and/or elevation changes on a well-marked route.
- Orange: route presenting some technical difficulties and/or poor route viability (markings or visibility of the path).

From (S/E) to (2): Green difficulty
These sections are fairly easy to complete in an urban environment, then on a path.
Yellow-red markings - GR® de Pays

From (2) to (3): Blue difficulty
No difficulty, follow a path uphill with a gentle slope.
Yellow markings.

From (3) to (4): Green difficulty
The path is fairly easy to follow.
Yellow markings.

From (4) to (5): Blue difficulty
Continue along a path without encountering any difficulties.
Yellow markings.

From (5) to (6): Blue difficulty
There are a few slightly challenging slopes on the way down. Once you reach the meadow, the rest of the route is fairly easy.
Yellow markings.

From (6) to (7): Blue difficulty
After running along the edge of a field, the path then continues for a short while on a fairly gradual uphill slope.
Yellow markings except for the short section joining the GR®.

From (7) to (8): Blue difficulty
The path continues on a gently sloping trail.
Yellow markings.

From (8) to (10): Blue difficulty
First, you follow a path with a few fairly steep slopes, then the route becomes pleasant with no significant elevation changes.
Yellow markings.

From (10) to (11): Blue difficulty
On the way down, take a path, then after reaching a trail, you have two choices: either follow it to the right for an easier but longer route, or continue straight ahead on slightly rugged terrain (the route described here). Further down, follow an easy path to Rosy Castle.
Yellow markings.

From (11) to (12): difficulty Blue
On the way up, follow a path that presents no difficulty.
Unmarked section

From (12) to (14): difficulty Blue
The route follows a path with no significant difficulty and descends a gentle slope after joining the GR®.
Section marked in yellow and white-red GR®.

From (12) to (14): Orange difficulty
There is a relatively short section of steep path (ropes are provided on the most difficult sections).
NB: it is also possible to avoid this section by continuing straight ahead, although this route is slightly longer (see the route on the IGN or OSM maps).
Yellow markings

From (14) to (15): Blue difficulty
Follow a path downhill, which is not difficult.
Yellow markings

From (15) to (17): Green difficulty
These two sections are easy to complete, mainly in an urban environment.
Yellow-red GR® de Pays markings.

From (17) to (18): Blue difficulty
Follow a fairly easy trail.
Yellow-red GR® de Pays markings.

From (18) to (19): Blue difficulty
An easy trail is followed.
Yellow markings

From (19) to (20): Blue difficulty
This includes minor difficulties:
- A few steep slopes at the beginning of the section,
- A short, slightly uneven section overlooking a small cliff (caution!).
Yellow markings with 8A label

From (20) to: Green difficulty
Follow a very easy path.
Yellow markings

From to (S/E): Green difficulty
Route through an urban environment.
Yellow-red GR® de Pays markings.

We did this hike in sunny weather on the first day of March. We shortened it by about 3 km by going from the start to point 8 (Croix des Engoulures) via the Chemin de la Platte.
There were beautiful views of the Jura mountains and the Bresse plain from the ridge path between the cross and the Col des Justices. There were also beautiful views from the ruins of Montfort Castle (the short, steep climb is well worth it!) and on the way back, where you can see the Beaujolais and Mâconnais mountains.
Discover the pretty villages of Cuisiat and Treffort along the way.
Thank you for suggesting this route.
