A circular route to explore a little-known part of the French Vexin Nature Park. Passing through the Aubette Valley and the Gerville Valley, you’ll discover the Gerville Tower, the remains of a former 12th-century commandery, and the 18th-century Château de Magnitot. This route can be complemented by a stroll through the old streets of Magny-en-Vexin.

Description of the walk

Car park of the Jean Zay Gymnasium, Rue Molière in Magny-en-Vexin.

(S/E) Head down Rue Molière and turn left at the roundabout towards Hodent and Vernon. Turn right into Rue du Général de Gaulle.

(1) Take the first left, Allée du 11 Novembre. Immediately after the first house, follow a track to the right and cross a footbridge over the Aubette. 50 m after the footbridge, turn left onto a path which soon passes under the dual carriageway.

(2) Continue straight on the GR®11 for about 2 km.

(3) Ignore a path on the right, which will be the return route. Further on, the path joins a track suitable for vehicles; follow it for 100 m and turn right opposite the gate of a small service building, then immediately left.

(4) At the next crossroads, head up a wide track to the right. At the top of the hill, when the track turns right, take the forest track that heads straight off to the left. After 800 m, the path descends into the Gerville valley.

(5) At the bottom, follow the path which runs along the left-hand side of the valley floor towards the hamlet of Gerville, visible in the distance, before coming upon Magnitot Castle further on. Continue to the castle park wall and turn left.

(6) On the right-hand side of the path, a gate offers a view of the Gerville tower, the remains of a 12th-century commandery. Continue along the path through the hamlet of Gerville. On leaving the hamlet, in front of a wayside cross, turn right onto a small road. Then take the first small path on the right.

(7) You will arrive at the gate of Magnitot Castle. Continue straight ahead and join a road on the right to enter Magnitot. Then turn left into Rue du Prieuré. At the end, follow a road on the right for 150 m and take a track on the right.

(8) After 1.5 km, in the forest, keep left onto a path leading off to the edge (yellow markings). The path, at the bottom of a descent, arrives in Archemont.

(9) Continue straight on along the road to cross the village. Let Rue aux Vaches branch off to the right and carry on straight ahead to leave Archemont. 100 m after leaving the village, when the road bends to the left, follow the path on the right which quickly descends to a crossroads and the GR® 11.

(3) Turn left and, following the route in reverse to the outward journey, head back to the car park of the Jean Zay Gymnasium on Rue Molière (S/E)
