Magny-en-Vexin circular loop

A varied walk through fields and meadows, with pretty houses in small villages and the church of Saint-Gervais adding a lovely touch of heritage.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park of the supermarket located north of Magny-en-Vexin, on the edge of the D86, near the roundabout with the D983. Access via the D86 or, from the centre of Magny, via Rue de Rouen then Rue de Paris.

No signposting

(S/E) Head west, away from the supermarket, past the petrol station and leave the car park via the Rue de Paris exit. Follow the road to the left for about twenty metres.

Red and white markings (rare)

Turn right into Rue Alphonse Subtil. Then take thefirst left, onto the gravel track known as Chemin de la Vallée du Prieur. Pass a chicane and continue along a grassy path. You’ll return to tarmac and immediately reach a crossroads.

(1) Then take thefirst left, Rue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny. When the street bends to the right, continue straight ahead. Pass a car park on the left and take thefirst path on the right into a wooded area. At a junction, turn right and follow a grassy path to the bridge over the D14.

Red and white + yellow markings

(2) Go under the bridge and continue straight ahead. Ignore a path branching off to the left and continue straight ahead, first along a wall and then through meadows. After a short shaded stretch, you’ll reach a crossroads.

Yellow markings

(3) Turn right (let theGR®11continue straight on). Climb gently between a field on the left and a fenced meadow on the right. Cross a short wooded strip and continue between the fields on roughly level ground. Come out onto a small road, follow it to the left and enter Archemont. Ignore a narrow lane on the left and continue through the village.

(4) Turn right with the road (there are twoPR® paths that split here; do not go straight on). Stay on the road, leave the village and climb gently. Descend again, following the D14 below on the right.

(5) At the “Give Way” sign, turn right and go under the D14 bridge. Continue straight on along the D983E (the purple line supposed to represent thePR® on the 1:25,000 map is incorrect here). Two options for following this fairly busy road:
- cross the road immediately, where visibility is good, and follow it along the left-hand verge, which is narrow but protected for half the distance by a crash barrier;
- follow the road along its right-hand verge, which is slightly wider but unprotected, and, at a junction with a track, cross over where visibility is reduced.
In both cases, take great care.

(6) After a small black gate and at the corner of a wall (on the left-hand side), head down to the left onto a faint path running along the edge of the field on the right-hand side. Pass an old wash house and head back up. You’ll come out onto a road at the corner of the town hall and follow it to the left for a few dozen metres. Leave the signposting briefly and climb a staircase to the right (Rue de l’Escalier). At the top, turn left and walk past the church on your left.

(7) Pass under a chain and follow a narrow lane to the right, going uphill. Ignore a no-entry street on the left, rejoin the signposted route and, at the junction that appears immediately, follow Rue de Montagny to the left. Cross a road on the left and head straight on towards Montagny. At the fork that appears shortly afterwards (cross), turn right, still heading towards Montagny. Walk past the cemetery on your left and stay on the small road for about 1 km.

(8) Then turn right onto a poorly marked path and walk alongside a hedge of small trees on your left (no arrows or markers here). The grassy path joins a power line and runs parallel to it. Cross a road and continue straight ahead on the grassy path running parallel to the power line.

(9) At a junction at the foot of an electricity pylon, turn right (twoPR® paths split here; do not continue straight on). Head south along a grassy path running parallel to a different power line from the previous one. Ignore a turn-off to the right and continue south along a gravel track.

(10) At a fork where the slope levels out, take the path on the right, which is narrower and more shaded. Head downhill, noting a memorial stone on the left, and at another fork, keep to the right. Return to the tarmac and continue downhill. Take thefirst left, Rue de la Croix, a roughly level path between two walls. At the end, turn right down Rue de la Cour Céleste. At the bottom, turn left.

(11) After about twenty metres, go down a flight of steps to the right and follow a winding path. After about a hundred metres, turn left and walk alongside a stream on your left. Walk alongside a field on your right and note a beautiful farmhouse on the left. Cross a small road and continue straight ahead along a grassy path, still following the stream. Cross the D86 at the pedestrian crossing and continue straight ahead along a path beside the stream. Pass by the foot of a statue of Christ.

No signposting

Ignore a footbridge on the left and cross a stream. Go through a small gate and follow a tarmac path towards the supermarket. You will then find the starting car park on the left (S/E).

Hello Jeanno from L'ESC, thank you for your feedback.

I’m sorry to hear that the path has disappeared… When I look at the cadastral map, the path between (8) and (9) is still marked as public.

Could you please clarify whether this applies to the entire route between (8) and (9) or just a section of it? Thanks in advance!

The path was virtually non-existent as soon as we turned after point 8 – a ploughed and planted path – so we had to make our way between two fields and through very tall grass before reaching point 9.

It’s a pleasant route, though there’s too much road for my liking. That said, the walk through the fields is lovely at the start of spring.

Hello,
After hiking the “Lake Moisson from Méricourt” route with Visorando, where the route wasn’t always clear as it wasn’t precise enough…

The “Magny-en-Vexin circular hike” was much better 👌🏼

However, it would be good to have approximate distances on the routes, such as:
- walk for 200 metres, take the grassy path…
- turn right and after 20 metres, turn left immediately
- more landmarks (monuments, buildings, houses…) so as not to turn back.

⚠️ Route marker, point (8): a ‘path overgrown with vegetation’ => maintenance carried out, easy passage

Overall, we managed quite well and the hike on 12/11 was pleasant with varied views and terrain.

We’ll choose a different route for the next one.
Thanks to you all 😉

A lovely walk in the sunshine on this first day of spring. Getting everyone together at the start was a bit of a struggle. It would be a good idea to include the name of the starting point, CARREFOUR MARKET. That would have been very helpful.
The route description is very precise, the scenery varied, alternating between woods, meadows and walks through villages with beautiful houses, two wash houses and a short, slightly less pleasant stretch along a fairly busy road. Thank you
