From the Col de Porte, a paved road climbs northwest (D57e) and leads to the Charmant Som sheepfold after 5 km.
Please note that in winter the road is blocked by a large pile of snow and you will have to walk, snowshoe or ski up the hill. The sheepfold is closed!
(S/E) From the car park, looking towards the sheepfold, you can see the path on the right that climbs eastwards to reach the ridge, then follows the ridge to the secondary summit of Charmant Som.
A footbridge allows you to cross the electric fences that prevent livestock from wandering, and you reach a wide path that has been redesigned and where large stones form a staircase. All you have to do is follow the red and yellow markings. Arrival on the ridge.
(1) The path climbs left towards the north, directly towards what is believed to be the summit. It is then marked in yellow only.
To preserve the flora, stay on the path. Signs and ropes remind those who stray to stay on the path. Reach the end of the ridge.
(2) It's not over yet! You have to descend a little and climb the next hump where you can see the cross at the summit.
(3) From there, you can see the buildings of the Grande Chartreuse below, Mont Blanc, Le Grand Som, Chamechaude, La Pinéa, Mont Aiguille, and more.
Return by the same route, taking care not to stray off the path: there are some very steep slopes nearby!
There is a herd of cows that provide milk for the sheepfold.
