Charmant Som circular loop

A lovely little hike that extends the climb to the magnificent, very popular viewpoint at the summit with a more secluded detour around Charmant Som. This leads to the promontory with a beautiful view of the Grande Chartreuse Monastery, returning to the car park via the western balcony.

Description of the walk

By car: Take the D512 road connecting Grenoble to Saint-Pierre-de-Charteuse. About 200 m north of the Col de Porte, turn towards Charmant Som on the D57d. After 300 m, on a flat section, ignore the road on the left and continue straight ahead on the D57e. Park at the end of the road in the Chalets de Charmant Som car park.

(S/E) From the Chalets car park (1,646 m), head to the end of the road and follow the yellow markings towards Charmant Som.

(1) After about 500 m, at the intersection sign, ignore theGR® de Pays trail on the right towards the small pass and continue climbing straight ahead to reach a secondary summit (altitude 1,830 m). After a short descent followed by an ascent, you will reach the summit of Charmant Som (altitude 1,867 m), where you can enjoy a superb view, including the western slope of Chamechaude.

(2) From here, the trail is no longer marked. Take the northern trail to the right of the summit cross. There is a faded green paint mark on a flat rock indicating the start of the trail. The well-marked trail leads to a gap. Descend between the rocks (north-west), then leave the trail after a right-hand bend. Descend diagonally down a grassy slope, then, after a flat section (altitude 1,720 m), join a path to the north.

(3) At the intersection, continue north towards a pass overlooking the Guiers Mort valley. This promontory offers an impressive view of the steep-sided Guiers Mort valley and, in the distance, the Grande Chartreuse monastery.
Retrace your steps to the intersection of the promontory trail.

(3). Leave the previous trail and take the one on the right. Descend into a valley and, in a wide circular loop, cross it to reach the opposite side. Climb (west) up a stony trail along the foot of a rocky ridge to its highest point (altitude 1,700 m).

(4) Turn left to cross the meadows, which are almost level, then descend into a cirque enclosed by a cliff. Follow it and, via a few hairpin bends, climb up to the Chalets de Charmant Som (S/E).

Very busy up to the summit, then very few people on the rest of the route.
Green markings easy to find.
Quite difficult on the descent with rocky sections where you need to use your hands to help you. (Avoid with children...)
Beautiful encounters with several chamois and stunning views of the monastery and the valley.
Walking time (including photo stops): 3 hours 10 minutes.

No worries about the second part of the hike; we can see that there has been a small rockfall, but it's passable.
A superb hike, but impossible for us in two hours because it's technical on the descent, where you have to take your time as there are lots of sections where you need to use your hands for support. We had to double that with breaks...
The views are magnificent and varied. We saw nine chamois on the way up (we left early) 😁
At the summit, you can find the green trail if you look around a bit.
The descent is well marked in the end, except at the very end where you have to look for the trail a little.
There were people on the way up, but very few on the way down.
And the inn is very nice for relaxing at the end of the hike 😉

WARNING!!! RETURN ROUTE IMPASSABLE!!!
I went on the walk yesterday with my family and at the cross at the summit, it was easy to find the way back, but as we started to descend, a hiker informed us that we should not go any further due to a rockslide that had occurred a few days earlier. We therefore turned back for safety reasons (falling rocks, etc.).
So be very careful and check before setting off!
Otherwise, it's a magnificent hike, and contrary to what many other reviews say, it's not very crowded (on a Wednesday afternoon in mid-July).

It's quite busy up to the summit, which is normal as it's accessible to most people; but after the cross at the summit, there's hardly anyone around. Be careful with young children, though, as the descent is a bit steep, but it's perfectly passable, and as there's no one around, you can see chamois.
Given how peaceful it is from point (2) onwards, it took me over two hours because I took the time to enjoy the scenery, the animals and the peaceful meadows.
Deckchairs are also welcome for a refreshing break at the chalets on arrival, especially as the herds are nearby with their cowbells...

Part 1 very popular
Part 2 much less so
However, I recommend doing the circular route in the opposite direction. The descent from the cross (second part) is difficult (25 to 35% gradient, I think).
Very clear route description. There may be some uncertainty about the starting point car park, but with GPS and GPX loaded, it was straightforward.

Very good and not very long, ideal when you don't have much time.
