Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the end of Rue de Kattenbach, in Thann, on the left bank of the Thur.

(S/E) From the car park, walk 80 m uphill and at thefirst crossroads, leave the main path and take the track slightly to the right, heading towards Croix du Rangen and marked with a Green Cross and a Red Ring.

(1) Below the cross, turn left, later cross a path and continue following the same markings to the junction at the Waldkapelle chapel.

(2) Take the track to the left of the chapel, marked with a Red Rectangle crossed out in white and a Blue Ring, until you come to a path on the right.

(3) Take this path (same markings) and at the next main junction, you can make a round trip by heading down to the left to discover the new Rehbrunnel Chalet at the foot of the Wotan Oak.

(4) From the Rehbrunnel shelter and Wotan Oak, return to the previous junction and continue to Pastetenplatz.

(5) Head up to the left towards Camp Turenne and follow the path, marked with a Red Rectangle crossed out in white.

(6) At the Becherkopf Shelter, continue climbing to the Camp Turenne Monument.

(7) Facing the monument, take the path marked with a Red Rectangle crossed by a White Rectangle down to the right, making a return trip to the Rocher d’Ostein.

(8) From the Rocher d'Ostein viewpoint, climb back up to Camp Turenne.

(7) Take the path immediately before the monument on the right, marked with a Red Rectangle and a Yellow Ring.

(6) Pass by the Abri du Becherkopf again and continue to a fork in the tracks, at a flat area.

(9) Turn right onto the path, marked with a Red Rectangle and a Blue Ring (GR®5), and head towards Place des Canaris.

(10) Turn right onto the path, marked with a Red Cross and Green Ring, and descend rapidly towards the Berthold Monument before rejoining the main path. You can descend directly to Engelbourg Castle without passing through Roche Albert, following the Red Rectangle markings (GR®5) alongside the River Thur. Reach Roche Albert.

(11) From the viewpoint, continue down through the forest until you reach a track.

(12) Turn right and follow the track, marked with a Red Cross and Green Ring, until you reach the right-hand bend.

(13) Take the path marked with a Red Saltire and Green Ring, slightly to the left, and reach the bottom of the valley.

(14) At the Thur, turn left and follow the Greenway marked with a Red Saltire and a Green Ring. In the built-up area, ignore the streets on the right and follow the signs for Engelbourg.

(15) At the last buildings on the way up past the church, take the few steps on the left and follow the unmarked path to the castle ruins.

(16) Leave the feudal site via the north and join the path marked with a Red Rectangle. Turn right, then left at the hairpin bend, and head straight down. Cross the footbridge and return to the Kattenbach car park (S/E).
