Description of the walk

Start at Rue du Kattenbachy, where there is a small car park at No. 15.

(S/E) Walk down the street to the junction. Head left down Rue du Rangen, cross the Thur and turn right to take the path leading to the town centre via Rue de la 1re Armée. Head towards the church and turn right onto Rue de la Halle until you reach Rue Saint-Thiébaut, then cross a bridge over the Thur. Turn right onto Rue Marsilly.

(1) At No. 7 Rue Marsilly, take the steps on the left. The path climbs to Engelbourg Castle via a very steep and slippery route (take care). On the way up, you’ll pass a botanical garden.

(2) Engelbourg Castle stands at the top of the climb, with its distinctive ‘Witch’s Eye’; continue along a path to the north and descend to the right via theGR®5for 50 m until you reach a junction with a track.
Further down, at the junction ofthe GR®5and the Waldhausen path, turn right to descend to Rue du Kattenbachy.

(3) Turn left, then right for about ten metres to reach the Chemin Montaigne. Follow it to the right. Stay on the path until you reach the Chapelle Saint-Urbain.

(4) 100 metres past the chapel, take the path on the right to join the greenway below on the right. The slope is steep and from here you can imagine how the grapes are harvested by hand, as well as all the work carried out in this vineyard. Turn right onto the greenway until you reach Rue du Rangen. Then turn right onto Rue du Kattenbachy to return to the starting point (S/E).

Hello,
See my message from February or March 2024. The staircase suggested after the chapel on the route is on private property. There is a small path further on, or you can continue along the path and, after about a hundred metres in the forest, head down to the right. You’ll come to a junction where you can head towards Vieux Thann, or turn left to reach Thann by following the River Thur. At the junction towards Vieux Thann, after crossing the River Thur, there’s a square with picnic tables. There are also two along the River Thur
I don’t know who might be able to correct the original document

We couldn’t find the staircase running perpendicular to the chapel – what a shame

Hello,
There are several changes:
- The starting path is currently (03.02.2024) closed. You must continue along Marsilly Street and then take the Waeschpfad path to reach point 2
- The route from point 4 is inaccurate, as it suggests descending via steps through the vineyards. The steps can be very slippery in wet or damp conditions, and are also on private land (the winegrowers aren’t too keen on this)
It is better to follow the path for about 200 metres and then take the local path known as the Eselspfad.
Who is authorised to amend the route on the map?
Thank you. Otherwise, the walk is pleasant

A walk that took me to parts of Thann I hadn’t seen before. I opted for a less steep path for the climb up to the Oeil de la Sorcière. The view from this vantage point is absolutely stunning. I had a bit of trouble finding the path back down to Thann after the chapel.
The only downside was the view of the chemical plant and the constant noise from the cooling towers.
A lovely walk.

A lovely walk.
I found it was well signposted up to the "Witch's Eye", but after that I didn't see any signs or markings to reassure us that we were still on the right track.
