Le Brec d'Utelle

From the village of Utelle, this hike leads to a fairly steep rocky outcrop. On a clear day, the Brec d'Utelle offers a 360° panorama from the Mercantour to the gulfs of the Côte d'Azur. This hike is almost entirely along theGR®5.
Caution: footbridges and very tricky sections in the final ascent.

Description of the walk

When arriving at the village of Utelle via the RM32, park in the angled parking spaces on Avenue Antoine Olivari.
The hike climbs all the way to Brec d'Utelle, alternating between steep and gentler ascents.

(S/E) Head north on Rue Antoine Olivari (RM32), skirting the village until you reach marker 111.

(1) Turn right and follow the signs for Brec d'Utelle.

(2) Continue to follow the path towards Brec d'Utelle. The well-marked trail branches off to the right and follows theGR®5. The climb is fairly steep.

(3) Continue to follow the path after crossing to the other side of the ridge.

(4) Halfway up (marker 156), the hike passes through the Col du Castel Ginesté at 1,220 metres.
Continue along the path to the next junction (marker 438).

(5) Then turn right, still heading towards Brec d'Utelle. There are magnificent views all along the way.
Pass over suspended footbridges, which are very secure. ¹
There is a short, very pleasant stretch through the forest. You will then arrive at marker 155.

(6) Leave theGR® 5 and take the path on the right for a final, very challenging climb to the summit.
Be careful on the very tricky sections in the last few metres of the climb. ²

(7) At the top, your efforts will be rewarded with a sublime 360° view of the Mercantour massif, the surrounding valleys, the Saint Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula and the Esterel mountains on the Mediterranean side.

The return journey follows the same route as the outward journey to (S/E).

Even in the fog, I love this hike: varied, beautiful forest trails, paths lined with primroses and liverworts, good climbs and a superb view when the fog finally lifts!

Hello,
I am a member of a hiking club and as such I often use Visiorando.
I mainly use it to map my routes, but I don't publish them because you have to comment on them before you've completed them (too tedious).
I think you should allow users to make their tracks public without having to add comments.
Also, the app often disconnects, so please fix that. And you can't start recording a route and finish it later, which is a shame...
Best regards

Stunning landscapes with long, rather dizzying balcony sections. A magnificent walk with numerous orchids and other rare flowers.
To top it all off, we saw three golden eagles circling nearby.

Magnificent is the perfect word to describe this superb hike: starting from the pretty hilltop village of Utelle, following the GR5 trail which offers a varied route and rich flora, including the superb turban lily, and a finale that lives up to expectations... in every sense of the word.
We are a senior couple (so the route is perfectly doable at 70 years of age) from Haute-Savoie, who are always amazed by the Mercantour. At the time of our stay, many of the trails and access points to the Mercantour park were still inaccessible; Storm Alex caused enormous damage. We wanted to show our support for this wonderful mountain range.
Thank you to all those who take the time to post their hikes and allow us to discover superb routes and landscapes.

A beautiful hike with very well-marked trails. It's a bit of a climb at the start, but then it becomes really enjoyable. Just be careful on the last few metres to the summit, you'll need to make sure you have a good grip, but it's well worth the effort👍😋. Enjoy your hike!

A magnificent hike in ideal weather conditions.
The view is superb, the climb is "alpine" and the GR5 is up to standard.
Right from the start, the quality of the GR is up to scratch, the slopes are perfect for both ascents and descents, the route is perfect, and the trail is a real pleasure to walk. The variety of route types is very enjoyable and gives a feeling of complete safety. Even the final metres of the summit climb are enjoyable, providing the thrill of arrival with the pride of having "conquered" the mountain and, above all, yourself.
A beautiful route, moderately busy on the Alpine road (north/south) passing through Les Granges de la Brasque, where the GR5 comes into its own on the descent to Nice (the actual end point of the GR5 is Place St Maurice).
This route is suitable for all modes of travel (bicycle, horse, on foot, etc.) and can be used as a stage with accommodation at Les Granges at the foot of Mont Tournaïret.
