Cime de Rocassièra, starting from Calençon

A magnificent hike that starts from the hamlet of Calençon and offers a 360° view of the Mercantour Massif, the Haute Vésubie and all the way to the sea! The Madone d’Utelles is visible on its ridge. Abundant and varied vegetation throughout the route.

Description of the walk

Park in the village of Calençon.

Follow the yellow markings. Fluorescent green markings also run alongside the route up to the Col de l'Autaret.

(S/E) Hamlet of Calençon. Marker 122a. Head into the Vallon de l’Imberguet.
The path climbs steadily but steeply through an oak forest, heading south-east. Pass some ruins and a high-voltage pylon (altitude 986m). After marker 123 (altitude 1021m), the gradient eases slightly. Continue towards the small pass.

(1) Small pass of Boiéra. Continue straight ahead along the ridge. The gradient levels off slightly as you reach the Baisse de Briquet, then the climb becomes steeper again.

(2) Col de l'Autaret. Marker 448. The peaks of Roccassièra are visible; there is now a 200m climb remaining. Follow the path which climbs up to the right through the stony area (the return route will be via the path on the left).
Caution: stay on course by following the original yellow markings (the fluorescent green markings continue towards Duranus).
The climb to the ridge is steep but not vertiginous. The Roccassièra peaks are divided into several rock formations.

(3) The path descends slightly and you will need to use your hands. The trail is fairly well marked. Take the path branching off to the left, going round the rock block from below (ignore any route that goes straight over the rock blocks).

(4) Cime de Roccassièra. Climb one of the boulders again to reach the summit, where a marker and a cross indicate the altitude.

Option 1: the descent towards the Col de l’Autaret can be made via the same route as on the way up.
Option 2(the one marked on the map): continue along a lovely, easy circular route that passes through the Col de la Lobe. See description below.

For thesecond option, head towards the pass by continuing downhill due north.
The path winds through a forest and over small scree slopes. It is clearly marked on the ground. The Col de Lobe can be seen below.

(5) At the Col de Lobe (marker 449), take the path branching off to the left towards the Col Autaret.

(6) On the grassy Plat Liberte, follow the path branching off to the left, the start of which is marked by two cairns. The walk continues along a undulating path that leads to the Col de l'Autaret.

(2) Follow the same route as on the way out, passing via Collet Boièra, to return to the starting point (S/E).

A superb hike with incredible views, particularly in winter (the sea and snow-capped mountains)
Please note: very steep, continuous climb up to the Cime de Rocassièra.
Hike suitable for fit people/those with a good level of fitness and strong knees (trekking poles strongly recommended for the descent)
Enjoy the hike

A superb hike in temperatures of 27–28°C (a bit warm, mind you...) and glorious sunshine.
The description provided by Visorando was spot on, no mistakes along the route; even the distance and elevation changes were accurate to within a few metres... when something’s great, you’ve got to say so.
The markings (yellow) were exceptional; credit must go to the person or people who put them in place – they were absolutely brilliant.
A short hike in terms of distance, but watch out for the elevation gain, which is quite significant up to the summit of Rocassiera; it’s almost constantly uphill with some very steep sections
Hike duration: 4½ hours including breaks
Hiking time excluding breaks: 3½ hours
Highly recommended

A superb hike, very enjoyable with some lovely views. It’s quite a climb at the start. We saw lots of birds of prey.
