Description of the walk

Road access: between Le Claux and Cheylade, take the D262 towards the waterfalls. Pass the first waterfall, then park on the left at the car park for the lakeside restaurant.

(S/E) Head south, go under the wooden arch and reach the lakeside. Walk along the lake, take the path branching off to the left, then turn right onto the small road which turns into a footpath at the edge of the woods. Pass the first barrier, stay on the path which climbs to the edge of the forest.

(1) At a second gate, take the road to the right for 50m then a path on the left. This follows the edge of the woods before entering the beech forest after passing through a fence. Just before a field, the path branches off to the left (a few wooden steps) and continues to climb until it reaches the wayside shrine.

(2) The path continues along the ridge and arrives at a mountain pasture (fence). Follow the path running alongside the fence to the end of the field

(3). After passing the fence, take a sharp left-hand bend and follow the path downwards. Pass in front of one of the farms in the hamlet known as Le Sartre, once you are on the road

(4) Turn left until you reach the gate you passed on the way there.

(1) Follow the same route as on the way there, but once at the lake, turn left to walk around it on the nature trail (S/E).

A lovely walk, nicely shaded which was much appreciated given the heat. Easy to follow and well signposted. The lake is very nice, as did the inn appear to be. The view from the top of the "Matador" was obscured by vegetation, which is normal in midsummer, but the panorama along the rest of the route more than made up for this minor "frustration".

A pleasant walk offering a mix of paths through the trees and out in the open. At the highest point, a wooden tower has been erected; the view is obscured by trees in summer, and please be careful as some of the steps are no longer secured. There’s a lovely spot for a picnic just beyond the tower, on the edge between the forest and the meadow.
