The Avaloirs viewpoint from the Champfrémont chapel

The goal of this hike, which can be done as a circular or round trip, is none other than the highest point in western France, at... 416 metres above sea level. From the viewpoint that has been built there, you can enjoy a 360° panorama and, on a very clear day, you can see the silhouette of Mont Saint-Michel, about a hundred kilometres away.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Sainte-Anne Chapel in Champfrémont. Park either in the car park along the D505 road or in the perpendicular car park in Impasse Sainte-Anne along the chapel.

When there are signs, follow the Route des Avaloirs.

Yellow markings (rare)

(S/E) Head east and go to the back of the car park perpendicular to the D505. Turn left, leave a pond on your right, pass a chain and take the Chemin du Bélier. Climb gently up this well-shaded path. Pass by a large cross at the foot of which there is a fountain, cross a small road and continue uphill on the path opposite. At a three-way junction not shown on the map, turn left and continue uphill into the woods.

(1) At the crossroads (metal barrier opposite), turn left and follow a flat path lined with beautiful beech trees. At the next crossroads, join a forest track and follow it to the left.

(2) Return to the D505 and follow it to the right. Ignore the Courtamiche path on the left, continue along the road and then ignore a perpendicular forest track (metal barriers on either side).

Yellow + red and white markings (rare)

Join theGR®22Cand continue slightly uphill on the road towards Les Avaloirs.

(3) At the end of a left-hand bend, leave the road and turn left onto a stony path that climbs between a regenerating forest plot on the left and a well-established forest on the right. Stay on the edge of the main path, heading north-northwest.

(4) At a crossroads, take the rightmost path, ignoring two other paths on the left (metal barriers), and enter the forest. Continue north-northwest, passing through a few wet areas. After a slight descent, you will reach a road at the Carrefour des Trois Seigneurs.

(5) Follow the road to the left and uphill. The slope becomes steeper and, on the flat section, you will reach a crossroads.

(6) Turn right and quickly reach the viewpoint at the top of Mont des Avaloirs. If you wish, you can climb the metal stairs to the top of the viewpoint (360° panorama, orientation table).

(7) Retrace your steps back to the crossroads.

(6) Here, you have two options:
- Return to Sainte-Anne Chapel by retracing your steps along the same route you took on the way there.
- Complete a circular loop as shown on the map and described below.
NB. Hikers should note that, unlike the outward journey, the return journey is mainly on tarmac.

There are no markings (the initial yellow markings disappear very quickly).

For a circular route, therefore, go straight towards Boulay-les-Ifs and descend slightly.

(8) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead, cross the hamlet of Basses Garennes and ignore a dead end on the left. Turn right with the road (cross), continue south, ignore the turnings on the right and reach a crossroads at the hamlet of La Tuilerie.

(9) Then turn left towards Le Perron. Climb gently, following the winding road and leaving the hamlet of Le Perron on your right. Then leave the hamlet of La Guiberdière on your left and continue on flat ground. At the crossroads (elevation 280), continue straight ahead.

(10) When the road turns right, take a stony path on the left and climb uphill. Walk along the left-hand side of a chestnut grove, then enter the woods. Pass between a small water management building (on the left) and a purification basin (on the right).

(11) Shortly afterwards, take a sharp right turn and descend. Pass a memorial stone and continue along the slightly uphill tarmac road.

(12) At the end of the road, turn right and descend.

(13) At the three-way junction, turn left towards Sainte-Anne. Go uphill and ignore the access road to L'Écoubière on your left. At the next intersection, go straight ahead despite the yellow cross. At the crossroads that immediately follows (elevation 273), turn right. Go downhill and you will soon reach the Sainte-Anne Chapel (S/E).

The forest section is very pretty, with the viewpoint as the highlight. However, the route includes too many sections on roads.

Like everyone else, I found there was a bit too much tarmac in the second half, but the road was quiet and the scenery was superb. In April, the verges were covered with flowers (purple primroses and wild orchids) and there were babbling brooks. Walks to do

A beautiful hike in the Alpes Mancelles, with stunning views and few visitors. The route follows small roads, which is a shame but is undoubtedly due to the topography of the terrain and the presence of farms.

Easy route to follow, the only point of interest is the viewpoint, lots of roads on the second part after the viewpoint.

We have created a slight variation on your route.
Starting from Mont des Avaloirs, several circular hikes are offered by the Mont des Avaloirs Tourist Office. We did "48 - Boucle des Avaloirs".
Our only "regret" is that a large part (50%) of the route is on small roads, which you did mention and indicate in the description, but which are not very busy with motorists.
