The woods tour between Avallon and Marrault

This walk is almost entirely through forest on the outskirts of Avallon, with a few sections on the road. The first part is mainly in forest, while the second part is more open, bordering meadows and pastures.

Description of the walk

Park at the southern exit of the town of Avallon, where there is a path running alongside the river and a few parking spaces available.

(S/E) Begin the hike by following the path uphill, which is the GRP® Tour de l'Avallonnais marked in yellow and red. Reach the hamlet of Les Pannats.

(1) Continue climbing along the path opposite. Stay on the GRP®, reach a road, turn right and, at the edge of the woods, you will find a crossroads with a path.

(2) Take it on the right, then reach a crossroads with several directions.

(3) Keep right on the GRP®, walk along a fairly flat section, and come out onto the D10.

(4) Cross it and follow it to the left for a few metres. Turn right onto a path. Note: a tree marked with a blue 2 makes it easy to spot. Continue until you reach another road.

(5) Take it to the left, then leave the woods and walk along the fields until you reach the junction with the D75.

(6) Continue along the GRP® until you reach the village of Monsenot, then Le Meix.

(7) Leave the GRP® here before the last house on the right and take the path on the right. Note: do not leave the hamlet via the road. There is a cross at the crossroads where the path is located. Continue along this path and cross a stream further on. Be careful, as this crossing can be difficult in wet weather. You will reach the D192.

(8) Cross it and continue straight ahead along the path, passing the houses of Montmardelin, until you reach the D194.

(9) Take it for a few metres to the left, then quickly turn right. Continue almost straight ahead, making a small circular loop at Borde Meunier. Then, at the edge of the woods, you will reach a Y-shaped crossroads with a cross in poor condition.

(10) Turn left. Continue through the woods, staying on this path and ignoring all the turnings on the right or left. Leave the woods and shortly afterwards you will reach the hamlet of Grandes Châtelaines and the D127.

(11) Take it to the right, then you will come to a crossroads with several directions.

(12) Leave the road by turning right and take the access path to an antenna supporting a PR®.

(13) Take it on the right, follow the yellow markings, walk along the field, then descend to the road.

(14) Turn right onto the road with great caution (traffic). Return to the car park in the southern part of Avallon (S/E).
