The circular Banchet: daffodils and Château de Montbel

Montagne du Banchet is very popular when the daffodils are in bloom: the proposed route runs along the flower-covered ridge and stretches to the ruins of the proud Château de Montbel.

Description of the walk

Departure from Col du Banchet, small car park opposite the chapel; if it is full, walk down the western slope a little to park at an old quarry, climbing school. The pass can be reached from Pont-de-Beauvoisin via Verel-de-Montbel, from Saint-Genix-les-Villages via Rochefort or from Novalaise via Ayn.

(S/E) Take the path that climbs to the left of the chapel to a first viewpoint overlooking the climbing school site. Continue north for 200 metres to a crossroads.

(1) Leave thePR® markings and turn left onto a less frequented path that starts off flat. Further on, veer to the right to climb up and rejoin the marked path, which you follow to the left for a few metres before a major crossroads.

(2) Turn left to take the ramp ascending westwards. The path heads north towards the edge of the Banchet cliff.

Follow the marked path near the edge of the cliff, which passes by a viewpoint and leaves two paths on the right that lead back into the forest. Descend a few dozen metres, then climb back up and finish on a wooded plateau that leads to a gravel forest road.

(3) Descend on the left to a crossroads near a clearing. Turn right until you reach the next crossroads.

(4) Turn left to climb up a forest track. At the top of this climb, take the path that branches off to the right towards the ruins that can be seen between the trees. This path climbs quite steeply up the slope, then crosses to the left, with a few metres of descent down the slope, before climbing back up to a dip in the ridge.

It reaches a small plateau where you can see the remains of the castle's first defences, turns sharply right and climbs gently towards the ruins: the old rampart, square tower and then the large, gutted wall of the keep.

(5) Retrace your steps to a flat area and turn right to follow the old access road to the castle, which descends towards the south-east until it joins a path climbing up from the left.

Turn right onto this path, which gradually climbs uphill. Ignore the path on the right
the path and continue straight ahead, either along the path at the edge of the forest or along the tracks in the meadow. You will arrive at the forest road at Le Chatelard, very close to the forest road.

(6) Turn left onto this road, which descends and becomes tarmac. At the edge of the forest, turn right onto a path in a field, which curves upwards to re-enter the forest and join a good marked forest path.

Take it on the right towards the south for a long flat stretch. In the middle of the forest, turn right to go straight to the crossroads.

(2) Descend the marked path.

(1) Continue downhill for 100 metres and turn left onto a forest track that leads back to the road, passing just behind the chapel (S/E).

Notes

The route is not difficult, running along paths or trails (generally marked) throughout: there are just a few metres that are a little steep along the cliff and on the climb up to the château.

There are many possible variations given the density of the trails: the most obvious is to shorten the circular route to a forest trail by returning between (3) and (6) without climbing up to Château de Montbel.

This circular route can also be done from the Col de la Crusille, which is less frequented than the Col du Banchet: take the forest road that leads from the north to the outskirts of (4) (allow an extra 40 minutes).

Worth a visit

Daffodils are very abundant in early spring, especially between (2) and (3).

The route is mainly through forest, with a few views of the Avant-Pays Savoyard and the Épine and Chartreuse mountains from several promontories on the edge of the cliff and from the Château de Montbel (breach in the wall or top of the rampart on the left).

The walk took place on 9 March. The daffodils were in full bloom. Absolutely lovely!

As nature had not yet awakened, we had superb views, two or three daffodils in bloom (inevitable in February) and small white bells (not lily of the valley in February). We pushed on to the viewpoint at the Col de Crusille... the view is nice, but I'm not sure it's worth the detour. Perhaps it would have been better to push on to the Col du Grand Bec on the opposite side. Otherwise, the hike was very nice, hilly so as not to get bored, and we really enjoyed it.

Of course, at the end of April, the daffodils have disappeared and the walk loses some of its appeal, as the route is almost entirely through woods with no view of the plain except from the two viewpoints (one 100 metres after the start of the Col du Banchet, and the second, known as La Forêt, which is marked on the IGN map but is actually located 80 metres further south). It is worth extending the walk after returning to the Col du Banchet by going to the Grand Bec viewpoint, the most beautiful viewpoint in the area.

On the way there, daffodils everywhere, but still not quite in bloom depending on their exposure. Perhaps a little early in the season.
In any case, daffodils are guaranteed.

A lovely walk with the family! The daffodils were past their best, but we saw fields full of them! We'll definitely be back next year at the right time!

At the end of the trail, when you come out of the forest, the path through the field is not very well marked.
Otherwise, it's a very beautiful hike in pleasant surroundings.
