On the heights of La Bridoire

A pleasant walk in good weather. Some sections are quite steep.

Please note that for much of the route, signposting is virtually non-existent. Take care, and use the map or GPS track.

Description of the walk

Head to one of the car parks near La Bridoire church. Personally, I found a space at the post office car park.

(S/E) Cross over the Ruisseau du Grenan and turn left onto Rue du Bert. Walk up to the cross.

(1) Head left. At the bend further on, turn left onto Chemin des Roches. Follow it, then go under the railway line. About 200 m further on, at a bend, take the path down to the left which leads you to the footbridge.

(2) From here you can walk into the canyon. It’s a lovely spot. Head back up the other side of the stream. Go round the back of a house, then join a stony path. Go under the railway line again and carry on to the next hamlet.

(3) At the Fork in the road, take the path on the right. Join the Route des Champs du Mont. Head up to the right towards Chante-Merle. Cross the level crossing, then turn left onto the Chemin de la Massette. Continue to the road.

(4) Turn left, towards La Rochette. Walk for about 300 m. On your right, in the meadow, you will see three posts, the remains of an old shed.

(5) Here, turn right and cross the meadow to the edge of the forest. Go through the electric gate and follow the path leading off to your left. 100 m further on, you’ll reach a Fork in the road. A yellow arrow points to a path climbing to the right. Follow it. This path climbs quite steeply. It is lined with chestnut trees. From time to time, you will see yellow markings.

After 800 m, you’ll reach a clearing where the path then veers left. Walk along the meadow. Soon, the path turns left again, heading north. You’ll arrive at the hamlet of Béranger; walk through it and head down to the D921.

(6) Take the road on the right. Continue to the next houses. Turn right onto the Chemin de Bagné, which runs alongside the Ruisseau de Grenant.

(7) Just after crossing the stream, take the path on the right signposted for the canyon. Follow it to the next signposts. From there, head towards Les Roches. Walk for another 600 m or so and you’ll reach another junction.

(8) Turn right towards La Bridoire. You will soon come across an arrow indicating that you should turn left.

(9) Take this path, which descends quite steeply. The path is not very visible. You will soon reach a Fork in the road. Turn right here. Follow this path, go under the railway line and you will arrive at the hamlet of Le Bert.

(10) Join the road. Go straight on, then turn right. The road turns into a track.
Continue to the cross.

(1) From there, head back down to the left and return to the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk. The path is quite steep in places, both uphill and downhill. You’ll need to be a keen walker. There are hardly any signposts, so make sure you follow the GPS track on your phone. Personally, I loved this walk.

A really lovely walk. You need to be in good shape – the climbs were quite tough for me; there’s more elevation gain than the map suggests. You can see the gorges as you cross the footbridge – a really beautiful setting.
