Loop around La Bridoire and Saint-Béron

A very pleasant walk, often in the shade. Ideal for very hot days. Very little tarmac and, as a bonus, waterfalls.
Points of interest: the Robin Stele (a tragic episode in the Resistance), the gorges visible from the footbridge, the waterfall, etc.

Description of the walk

Head to the car park at La Bridoire post office. It is easy to find, opposite the church.

(S/E) Cross the road, turn right, cross the stream, then turn into Rue de Bert. Walk uphill for a little over 100 m and turn right onto Chemin des Romains. Walk downhill to the Saint-Béron road (D203).

(1) Cross it, heading towards the cemetery. Just after the stream, take the marked path on the left. Walk for about 200 m and cross the stream. 100 m further on, at the crossroads, turn left, go through the gate and continue towards Saint-Béron SNCF railway station. Follow this path, parallel to the road, until you see the sign for Saint-Béron railway station.

(2) Follow the road to the left, pass the small station, then cross the tracks. Pass the town hall and continue to the roundabout. Turn left and go up to the church square.

(3) Continue along the road and turn right at the crossroads. At the fork, continue straight ahead. Go up to the antenna. Shortly afterwards, leave the tarmac and rejoin the road. You will soon see a signpost.

(4) Go up to the right towards Saint-Franc. Follow the road to the hamlet of Les Antes.

(5) Pass behind the houses, then take the fairly wide path heading north. The path is not marked, but it is well-trodden and very easy to follow. Walk for about 1 km until you reach a barn.

(6) Just before it, take the path that climbs to the left and walk to the hamlet of Gruat.

(7) Take the road on the far left. Walk 100 m to Le Georgeat, then turn right onto the path that leads to the Stèle à Robin.

(8) Ignore the path that descends to the left and continue straight ahead. After about 400 m, you will come to another signposted path.

(9) Turn left onto the road that descends to another intersection.

(10) Here, take the path on the right. Walk until you find another signpost. From there, turn right towards the footbridge over the Ruisseau du Grenand.

(11) Cross the stream and turn left. Pass the house and join the gravel path. Descend towards the viaduct.

(12) Go under the viaduct and very soon you will see a path down to your left. Take it and go down to the waterfall.

(13) Retrace your steps, rejoin the road to the school opposite and, after 50 m, you will find Montée des Pavés on your left.

(14) Go down the many steps towards the church. Cross the road (D203) and head to the car park (S/E).

Apart from the passage at the end through the Grenand gorges/canyon and the waterfall, this hike is not particularly interesting.
After the memorial stone, there is a fairly steep descent. Not recommended when it has rained.
Be careful not to take the path that indicates a footbridge, as this is not the correct footbridge.
We followed it and ended up in Bagné.
We turned back and, on the advice of two hikers we met, at the sign for the (wrong footbridge), you have to go down to the right (when you've taken the wrong path and are climbing back up from Bagné).
Further down, you will find yourself at "Les Roches". Then, head towards Bridoire and take the small path along the railings. This path leads to the gorges.
