Lake Lioson and Pic Chaussy

After reaching Vers les Lacs, you will hike through beautiful scenery to climb to the summit of Pic Chaussy, where you can enjoy a sweeping panorama. The descent is on another slope, still in beautiful surroundings, to the lovely Lac Lioson.

Description of the walk

Starting point: Lioson-d'en-Bas car park.
Access: Head towards Col des Mosses via Route 11, which connects Aigle and Château d'Oex. The small access road to the car park is located about 400 metres from the pass, before the pass and on the right when coming from Aigle, after and on the left when coming from Aigle. Then, at all intersections, follow the signs for "Lioson-d'en-Bas" or "Lac Lioson". Pass the Lioson-d'en-Bas farm and continue along the road to the car park, which is the end of the road. It is about 2.1 km from Route 11 to the car park.

There are directional signs at all major intersections. White-red-white markings can be found along the entire route, but please note that these are the general markings for mountain trails in Switzerland and are therefore also used on trails other than the one you are hiking.

This hike was originally proposed as a circular hike, starting at Lake Lioson. Several hikers suggested doing the circular hike in the opposite direction so as to finish at the lake (and enjoy refreshments at the refuge). I therefore decided to reverse the direction of the hike. Below are two descriptions, written in each direction.

Circular in an anti-clockwise direction

(S/E) Head south towards Vers les Lacs. Climb steeply, winding your way through shrubbery. Ford a stream and go through a gate. Continue climbing and ford the stream twice more. Climb more gently, pass a chalet on your right and cross the stream one last time on a footbridge without a railing.

(1) Continue south-southwest and walk along a lake on your right. Climb up a valley, heading south. Higher up, turn sharply left (east). Pass at the foot of rocky outcrops on the right and reach a pass (not named on the map).

(2) Then follow the second path on the right south-southeast towards Pic Chaussy (the first path on the right, which heads southwest before turning back, joins the main marked path further on, but it is steeper). Pass at the foot of scree coming from rocky outcrops on the left. Then follow steep switchbacks to reach the ridge to the right of a small rocky peak.

(3) Turn right (west) and follow the ridge directly to the summit, which is accessed via a gate in a sheep fence. N.B. The marked trail first winds below the ridge on the south side, but it is easy to follow the ridge directly. Nevertheless, be careful of the steep slopes on the north side.

(4) Descend to the unnamed pass by following the same route in reverse.

(2) Turn right and descend the grassy La Chéneau valley towards Lac Lison, which is clearly visible. Make a hairpin turn to the left, then turn right to reach the south-western tip of the lake.

(5) Go through a gate and walk along the lake on your right until you reach the refuge.

(6) Head north and take a forest track towards Lioson d'en Bas. Follow this track, which is quite steep from start to finish, to the car park where you started (S/E).

Circular in the direction of the clock

(S/E) From the car park, continue along the road, turning left onto the forest track (closed to vehicles) towards Lac Lioson. Follow this track, which is steep from start to finish, leading directly to the lake and its refuge.

(6) Then follow the direction of Pic Chaussy and walk along the lake on your left.

(5) Near the south-western tip of the lake, go through a gate and then turn right. Climb up the grassy La Chéneau valley towards Pic Chaussy. Make a hairpin turn to the right and continue climbing to a pass (not named on the map).

(2) Then follow the first path on the left south-southeast towards Pic Chaussy (the second path on the left, which heads southwest before turning back, joins the main marked path further on, but it is steeper).

Nevertheless, be careful of the escarpments on the north side.

(4) Descend to the unnamed pass by following the same route in reverse.

(2) At the pass, take the path on the left (west) that descends towards Vers les Lacs. Pass at the foot of the rocky outcrops on the left, then turn right (north) to descend a valley at the bottom of which are two lakes (one of which is very small). Walk along the larger lake on your left and you will reach a chalet.

(1) Turn left towards the chalet and cross a stream on a footbridge without a railing. Then leave the chalet on your left and follow the path, which descends slightly at first, towards Lioson-d'en-Bas / Col des Mosses. Descend and ford the stream twice. Go through a gate, turn right, cross the stream a third time and descend steeply, winding your way through shrubbery to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots and equipment are essential.

The summit of Pic Chaussy is not very large and is not suitable for a picnic with a large group. However, the shores of Lac Lioson (5) or the large lake at Vers les Lacs (1) are ideal for a break. Bar-restaurant-refuge at Lac Lioson (6) (Euros accepted). Refreshment bar at Vers les Lacs (1).

Between Vers les Lacs (1) and Lac Lioson (5), the mountain pastures are grazed: yaks in the valley above Vers les Lacs, sheep on the ridge towards the summit, cattle in the Combe de la Chenau. Do not disturb the herds, keep dogs on a leash.

N.B. The total elevation gain is slightly underestimated, as the altitude of the highest point is reduced by about 50 metres: allow between 725 and 750 metres instead. Allow between 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours 15 minutes to climb to the summit, and around 1 hour 30 minutes to descend, not including stops.

A 1:25,000 map is required (at least the one accompanying this description).

Hike completed twice by the author, the first on 27 July 2017, the second on 16 August 2018.

Worth a visit

- Superb setting between (1) and (5).
- Lake Lioson (5).
- Extensive panorama from Pic Chaussy: peaks of the Vaud Alps, including Diablerets; peaks of Chablais; Dents du Midi; Mont Blanc Massif; Fribourg Pre-Alps; Lake Geneva;...

Hello,

Several hikers have suggested doing the circular in the opposite direction to the one originally proposed (which was clockwise).

I have just reversed the direction of the route, which now starts at Vers les Lacs and ends at Lac Lioson. I have written a description in this direction but have kept the original description in the opposite direction. The hike is therefore described in both directions.

A very beautiful, challenging hike! There is no parking at Lioson d'en-Bas, so we parked at Col des Mosses, which added an extra 2 km of climbing! :-)
A magnificent hike, we did it in reverse to finish with the view of the lake!
there's a 900-metre climb from the Col des Mosses, so you need to be fairly fit, but by taking it slowly, it was doable for us and our 7-year-old daughter!

Lovely hike! We weren't able to go to the summit of Pic Chaussy because of the snow.

Hello,

Thank you to the visitors who have posted comments on this walk. Several suggested doing the loop in the opposite direction to the one proposed. There are arguments in favour of this (as there are for the published direction).

It's up to you to take a good look at the map to decide which direction to take.

We followed Thed's advice and did the circuit in the opposite direction. I can confirm that this is what you need to do to be in the shade of the mountain in the morning for the ascent, and to enjoy a superb view of the lake all the way down. The only drawback is that the car park at the start is closed (in August), so there are a lot of cars parked all along the road, which is already very narrow. It's almost impossible to cross the road, thank goodness we're in Switzerland. Drivers were courteous and understanding.

In my opinion, the circuit should be done in the opposite direction (ending at the lake). The hike isn't very difficult and the views are magnificent all the way.

Very beautiful lake, even with mixed weather, there are people on this hike;
the car park is small at the foot of this hike, car park at the Col des Mosses I recommend,
climb up to pic chaussy, down to the lake, picnic in the middle of a herd of nice cows, we came back down via pra cornet, the hike is longer but very nice in the mountain pasture and forest.
Back to the Col des Mosses where we parked our car.

Lovely views. Beware, the car park fills up quickly in summer. We did this walk with a dog and children, the youngest being 5 years old.

Family hike with 2 children aged 7 and 9: enjoyed by all. Chamois, ibex and marmots. Lakes and névés to cross, an abundance of flora and a magnificent view. The stop-off at the Petits Lacs refreshment bar is atypical and delicious! There's no shortage of signposts, just let yourself be carried along!

Good description of this hike. It should perhaps be added that there is a possibility of descending directly from Lac Lioson to the small lakes. This shortens the hike by around half an hour.

Hello ElisaO,

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the walk!

I've noted your comment about access to the car park: I've clarified (I think) the description and indicated the distance (2.1 km) between the Col des Mosses road and the car park.

It would be easier to get to the car park if you had an idea of how many kilometres you'd have to cover.
Climb up to the lake, then around the lake and over the pass, heading east for the Pic Chaussy.
Beautiful views of Lake Geneva and Les Diablerets.
Return to the pass for the descent, stopping at the yak bar and returning to the car.

Hello
hike done in the other direction, going up via "Vers les lacs". Fresh morning guaranteed. Beautiful mountain route with superb panoramas throughout the day and 360° views at the Pic. The descent from the (magnificent) lake refreshment bar is on a gravel 4x4 road. Not great, but in no way detracts from the interest of this superb hike.
