Description of the walk

(S) From Lac Blanc, take the path back down to the Refuge Jean Collet and head for the four-way junction.

(1) Turn right towards the Col de la Mine de Fer and head for the Habert de la Pierre. As its name suggests, this shelter is built against a huge rock.

(2) Walk along successive terraces between the rocks, which are home to marmots that are nevertheless very shy. The climb up to the Col de la Mine de Fer becomes very steep if you follow theGR®. It is better to take the path marked in yellow. Reach the pass.

(3) Return tothe GR®, and proceed with great caution across the snowfields and scree along a steeply sloping path that plunges down to Lac de Crop, an invitation to relax. In the background, you can see the Chartreuse, Bauges and Vercors mountain ranges! Walk along the eastern side of the lake and climb up the opposite side to rejoin the path towards the Pont de la Betta (01:30).

(4) Continue along theGR® which becomes more pleasant and shaded, pass through a metal gate, remembering to close it behind you, and you will soon come to a footbridge at Habert de Crop.

(5) Continue on to a track junction.

(6) Go straight on to reach the water intake and pumping station.

(7) Cross the ford and head down the wide track which takes us back to our starting point from the previous day (E).

Day 2 of the Tour du Grand Replomb.

My three friends and I (we’re all 21) felt the route was a bit too easy and wanted to climb a peak. So we decided to get out an IGN map and see if we could make it more challenging and reach a summit. The Grand Replomb seemed the obvious choice.
So we took a detour via this peak. The ascent is very tough: you climb up a very steep gully with no marked path. The descent is just as tough. I therefore strongly advise against taking this detour if you aren’t sufficiently prepared for this level of difficulty! If you are ready, then don’t hesitate – it’s well worth the effort.

Technical descent from the Col de la Mine de Fer to Lac de Crop.

We were able to refill our water supplies several times thanks to the numerous springs flowing from the lakes and ‘glaciers’. No one fell ill.

Hello,

A great hike, easily accessible by car.
The route is brilliant; the climbs are manageable and not too steep.
The views are magnificent – it’s a real feast for the eyes!!!

/!\ WARNING /!\: I completely agree with Condor’s comment.
The descent from the Col de la Mine de Fer towards Lac de Crop is very technical.
It is suitable for experienced hikers and/or those equipped with crampons.

Hello,
I didn’t complete the entire route in question, but only the Freydane Glacier via the Jean Collet refuge and Lac Blanc. It’s a magnificent lake and it’s worth climbing up to the glacier, if only to see how far it has receded.

Just a comment and a word of warning: between the junction of the path leading directly from the footbridge over the Vorz stream and the lake’s lock, the path runs beneath rocky outcrops and is directly in the path of stones that may fall as hikers pass by.

Best avoided on busy days, therefore.

A magnificent hike in fine weather! However, those who love solitude and silence in the mountains will probably find the descent from Lac de Crop to the car park a bit too touristy (a Sunday stroll that is clearly very popular with local families)
Point to note: whilst the ascent between the Jean Collet refuge and the Col de la Mine de Fer is straightforward, the descent between the pass and the lake, which faces north, can be tricky. At the end of May, there were still thick patches of snow and crampons proved essential. If you do not have the appropriate equipment, do not hesitate to ask the wardens at the Jean Collet refuge for advice before attempting the climb to the small pass; they will be able to provide information on crossing the pass and may recommend an alternative route to reach the lake via a different path.
