The Old Town of Monteils

A walk through the heath, dotted with views of Alès and the Cévennes. You’ll set off to explore the oppidum after discovering the village, which is full of charm. It’s a lovely springtime circular route.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Monteils school, on the edge of Rue de la Traversée du Village.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head left (D253), walk past the school on your right and reach the Place du 19 mars 1962.

(1) Turn left and take the narrow lane on the left at the corner of the square. Follow the sign for “Les Puechs” and continue along the path before quickly returning to the tarmac. Follow the small road (Chemin de Peyras) for a short while, then first turn left then right and continue along the magnificent path almost directly opposite, just before No. 515.

(2) At the end of the path, take the track on the right for 300 metres, following the sign for "Les Gardies".

(3) At the next junction, turn right onto a path, following the PR® markings and the signs for “Calade des Arenas” then “La carrière”, passing under the road.

(4) Turn right onto the road for 100 metres, then turn left to rejoin the marked path. You will finally arrive at the site of the Old Town at a fork in the path (elevation 229).

(5) Follow the markings to the left and the signposts for: “Les Remparts Ouest”, “la Vieille Cité” and “l’Oppidum”. Continue for 400 metres until you reach another fork (elevation 225).

(6) Take the path on the left that leads downhill. Then turn right onto a track to reach a crossroads.

(7) Continue straight on, following the signposts.

(8) Head down to the left along a path through the trees, then climb back up to join a track.

(9) Follow it down to the right to reach the road. Take care when crossing it.

(10) Once on the other side of the road, follow the track then immediately turn right onto a single track and follow the markings.

(11) Cross the road to follow the path opposite and reach the car park (S/E).

The route is very varied and picturesque, but... I should have read "Perdigal"’s review, as we wasted a lot of time trying to find the starting point. In fact, the small square where the route starts is the one named after 19 March 1962, and "la traversée du village" is the name of the street, not an invitation to walk through the village!!
We’ll have to do it again, as we took the shortcut from No. 5 to get back to MONTEILS.

A lovely little walk with no particular difficulties apart from the starting point. This is located right on the southern corner of the small Place du 19 Mars, a tiny stretch of alleyway that leads onto a pleasant footpath.
