Description of the walk

Start from St Victor’s Church in Glons, Rue de la Dérivation, Bassenge

(S/E) With your back to the church forecourt, turn right into Rue du Curé Ramoux. Continue to the main road, cross it and head straight up Thier Gros Jacques.

(1) Before reaching the top of the hill, just as the path bends to the left, turn right below a large mast. The path winds its way through low-stem orchards and then fields, eventually reaching the motorway.
Once you reach the top of the motorway, continue left along it until you reach a concrete road, which you take to the left towards the communication pylons and the village of Elst.

(2) At the entrance to the village, immediately after the first house, take the concrete path on the left which leads back into the countryside. Then take the first path on the right, with the Paifve water tower visible on the left and the Basilica of Our Lady of Tongeren straight ahead on the horizon.

(3) Take the concrete path to the left after passing under the high-voltage power line, then turn right after passing under the same power line again. This sunken lane descends gradually towards the village of Sluizen.
At the end of the path, turn left onto Millerweg, then right at the next junction onto Viseweg.

(4) Shortly after Sint-Servatius Church (Saint Servatius) and house no. 353, turn left onto the small path that goes round the church and the cemetery and heads towards the Geer. After crossing the bridge, take the gravel path on the right which runs alongside the meadows and then joins the bank of the stream. This path continues as a street (Tweemolensstraat) and leads to the centre of the hamlet of Nerem.

(5) At the end of the street, cross the small square and continue straight ahead along the tarmac footpath (a former railway line). This runs alongside the quays and warehouses of a former chocolate factory recently converted into luxury apartments. At the first junction, turn left into Rue Dreef, then left again into Neremstraat, passing in front of the former chocolate factory once more.

(6) Continue straight ahead, return to the small square and cross it.

(4) Take the footpath on the right, a former railway line that runs parallel to Tweemolensstraat at the start, and follow it to the end.

(7) At the end of the footpath, take the dirt track on the right which leads back, makes a first turn left then right and passes under a railway bridge (single track). After the bridge, take the dirt track on the left which leads to a level crossing.

(8) Cross the level crossing and continue straight on along Rue de la Gare.

(9) At the roundabout, do not go under the bridge but take the small path on the right which runs alongside the railway (double-track) and joins a road that crosses the tracks. Cross this bridge. Then turn right into Rue Jonas. At the end of the street, turn left into Rue Saint-Pierre, then right twice to cross the Geer and reach Glons Church (S/E).

Country walk. Easy, uncrowded paths.
We opted to take the Chavée de Glons route, which was suggested in one of the comments. It's a lovely shaded trail, which was greatly appreciated given the 30 degrees forecast for today.

A lovely country walk. It is very easy as there are many paved paths.

A pleasant route with interesting scenery. I can also recommend a shorter alternative: when leaving the village of Elst, instead of heading towards Sluizen on the first road on the right, continue straight ahead and take the second road on the right, through the pretty wooded lane of Glons.

A lovely walk around the Geer valley in Glons. Beautiful views of the Herve region and towards Tongeren.
It's a shame that we don't spend more time along the Geer (which, incidentally, has its source in the village of Lens St Remy, in the municipality of Hannut, neighbouring the municipality of Geer...).

Hello!
Thank you for this itinerary, which I enjoyed overall, especially the first half (paths between orchards and fields until reaching the Geer in St Servais). My only regret (but this is not your fault) was that there was nowhere to sit (bench, tree trunk, large rock) along this section.
I would suggest two improvements to the description:
- No. 5: "continue straight ahead on the concrete footpath" (not "tarmac"): I was very unsure which way to go at this point and decided (correctly) to trust the map rather than the text.
- No. 8: if I am not mistaken, this level crossing is the one at Glons station. Perhaps you could suggest this point as an alternative starting and finishing point for those who do not have a car (as is my case), as trains are more frequent than buses on Sundays.
Once again, thank you for your initiative!
