La Tussonne from Vancé

Situated in the south-west of the Calais plateau, which is cut by steep-sided valleys, the village is divided by watercourses belonging to the Braye basin; the two main ones are the Charmançon and the Tusson. Its origins may date back to the Gallo-Roman period, but its history becomes clearer in the Middle Ages thanks to the discovery of coins. In the early19th century, following significant population growth, Vancé became home to a large number of craftsmen. In 1810, the village was home to thirteen weavers and twelve building tradespeople: four stonemasons, one bricklayer, one carpenter, three joiners, three shingle cutters and numerous other craftsmen catering to everyday needs.

Description of the walk

Church car park.

(S/E) Starting from the church square, head towards Rue de l’Abbé Antoine, opposite the war memorial, and continue to the right until the junction with the D66. Take this road to the left, then immediately turn left again onto the stony track towards the communal mill.

(1) Continue along the track for 300 metres to the hamlet of La Chaussée. Continue straight on along the Chemin des Coulées for about 700 metres.

(2) Head towards La Hardonnière on the right, leave the track on your left and continue for about 300 metres.

(3) Turn right and follow the road for 1 km. Pass the path on the left and La Commonière on the right.

(4) At the give way sign, turn right then take the small road immediately on the left. Pass Le Bordage and then La Cave du Pèle (Marie Virginie Vaslin’s house) on the left as you walk along the Tusson for 1.2 km.

(5) Take the footbridge on the right, cross the leat of the Moulin de Montchenou to reach the meadow (make sure to close the gate properly). Continue to cross the second footbridge over the Tusson. Go past the fence and continue straight on along the path towards the Vallée aux Thermaux. At the junction with the D34, follow the road to the right before taking the first road that climbs to the left to reach La Guillaumerie.

(6) Continue along this road for 700 metres and, at the four-way junction, carry on straight ahead for 500 metres.

(7) At La Bassacherie, take the road leading down to the right towards the village. Pass the cemetery and, at the end, turn left into Rue de l’Abbé Antoine to reach the church square (S/E).
