The Jewel of Courtanvaux

Bessé dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, the parish comprised numerous fiefdoms, including Courtanvaux, a parish seigneury elevated to a marquisate in 1609. The village developed particularly from the18th century onwards thanks to the establishment of pre-industrial sites, as evidenced by the cotton mill set up by Elie Savatier in 1735 (on the site of a former linen weaving mill) or the paper mill established at La Roche in 1824. The latter has since become the town’s main industrial site.

Description of the walk

Start at the Château de Courtanvaux car park.

(S/E) Leave the car park on the right and pass the castle entrance. Head to the right and go through the gate to reach the woodland. Follow the signposts through the woods. Head up towards the ruins of Guibert, then turn right.

(1) You’ll reach the tarmac road; continue straight on until you reach the main road, which you should take to the right. Walk along the pavement on the right. Pass the first junction (keep right), then turn right.

(2) Pass the church and head straight on towards Courtanvaux Castle.

(3) At the Portail des Lions, turn right. Walk alongside the stadium until you reach the woodland. Cross the first bridge, follow the stream on the left, cross a second bridge, then continue straight ahead on the path running alongside the road (note: there are several paths crossing here).

(4) At the ‘Arrivée’ sign for the fitness trail, in the woods, turn left. Cross the road and head back up into the woods on the left. Follow the markings through the woods. Ignore the junctions and stay on the same path until you reach the gate.

(5) Go through the gate and take the road on the right. Pass the tile works on your left. At the next crossroads, head towards the castle opposite. When you reach the dovecote, take the path on the left and follow the river (view of the castle). Cross the small bridge, then turn left.

(6) After the gate, just before the road, turn right to head back up into the woods. At the top of the hill, at the road, turn right to head back down towards the car park (S/E).
