A circular walk around the Tufière de Rolampont and the Gallo-Roman mausoleum at Faverolles

This walk, three-quarters of which is through woodland, allows you to enjoy two exceptional sites: the active tufa formation at Rolampont, and the Gallo-Roman archaeological site of the Faverolles Mausoleum.

Description of the walk

Park at the Tufière de Rolampont car park on the D254 between Rolampont and Villiers-sur-Suize.

(S/E) From the car park, go to the right of the information board, then follow the specific signposting for the Tufière Discovery Route to the eastern end of the route, at the spot marked as the source of the Tufière.

Green-yellow markings

(1) At the spring, instead of retracing your steps (to return to the car park), continue straight ahead along the path that climbs. After 30 m, turn right, then follow the very clear signposting. Cross the Ruisseau de Vaubrien via a crossing made of posts set in the ford. Continue straight ahead uphill to the crossroads.

Blue-Yellow Markings

(2) Turn left towards the Route de la Fontaine du Saut. Follow this marked path which runs along the bottom of the valley. It can be very wet (and littered with fallen trees) near the Fontaine du Saut: do not hesitate to follow the tracks of previous walkers who have bypassed the obstacles to the right. Reach the D155.

(3) Cross with care and take, slightly to the right opposite, a wide forest track. Follow it, ignoring the numerous paths to the right and left, until you reach a tarmac road.

Blue-Yellow markings and Red-WhiteGR®®145(Via Francigena) markings

(4) Turn right for 300 m and, at the junction, take the D155 on the left.

(5) Almost at the bottom of the descent, before a bend to the right, take a farm track on the right which follows the foot of the Combe Renard. Continue until you come to a path descending from the right to reach a pasture on the left.

(6) Take this track to climb at a right angle to the right. Reach a tarmac road and follow it to the left to the village of Faverolles.

Green-yellow markings

(7) In the village, at the first Fork in the road, turn right, then left. Cross the junction, then head down to the right to reach the bridge at the bottom of the village. Take the path just before the bridge which leads back up to the village. At the corner by the cemetery, turn right, then immediately left, then left again. Walk past the church.

(8) About 100 m after the church, take a small tarmac road branching off to the right. Climb up through the fields, cross the ridge and descend on the other side towards two high-voltage power lines.

(9) At the end of the road, under the power lines, turn left onto the stony path. You will reach a tarmac road.

(10) Turn right and walk uphill to the car park. Beyond the car park, take the path on the right. You will reach a junction with a map of the archaeological site.

(11) Follow the specific signposting to the left to walk the discovery trail.

(12) Pass by the Forest House and continue along the discovery trail.

(11) Back at the starting point of the discovery trail, turn right to reach the Forest House site (already seen on the circular portion of the trail).

(12) Continue along the path towards the east, reach a good forest track and turn left uphill.

(13) 100 m further on, turn right onto a good path through a clearing. The path is regularly marked by stone markers of various types.

(14) After about 1 km, the path turns right at a right angle. 700 m further on, you’ll reach a Fork in the road with a large stone marker in the middle of the path.

(15) Take the path on the left. At the T-junction, turn left to reach the D254. Turn right onto it, then, after 50 m, take a path leading down to the right (markings are faint). Pass the Sources du Lonceau. Just over 100 m further on, leave the main path to head down to the left (markings are faint) and approach the stream. Continue along the path to the car park (start/end).

Notes

Several designated picnic areas:
- Tufière car park
- Faverolles church
- Mausoleum car park
- the forest house
I carried out this reconnaissance after an exceptionally wet spring. No major difficulties, but some sections were very wet between points (1) and (4): make sure you wear suitable footwear. Walking poles may be useful.

A few more details would be helpful (street names, clearer directions at some junctions, etc.). But overall, it's easy to find your way around.
