Route de découverte de Langres

Langres is one of the sub-prefectures of Haute-Marne. The town is unique in being completely surrounded by ramparts, making it the town with the longest fortified wall in Europe. This section takes you on a tour of Langres’ historic centre and along the 3-kilometre-long walkway of the medieval fortifications. The route through the town itself is equally charming, featuring a number of historic monuments, including Saint-Mammès Cathedral, and for those wishing to extend their visit to Langres, there is also the town museum to explore.

Take the sharp left-hand bend and head for the rampart walk. Once at the top, turn left along the ramparts. Stay along the ramparts, pass the Tour Virot and the bishop’s guardhouse to reach the carriage of the old rack railway.

(2) Continue along the ramparts. Pass the Tour Piquante and reach the Porte Longe-Porte.

(3) Continue along the rampart walk. Pass in front of the Saint-Jean Tower and then the Petit Sault Tower to go over the Porte de l’Hôtel de Ville.

(4) Keep heading along the path that passes over the Gallo-Roman arch, then the Porte Beulière and the Porte des Terreaux.

Turn right towards the square and first turn left then right to go round the Tourist Office and arrive at the Porte des Moulins. Go under it and then past the restaurant "Le Clos Vauban". At the next junction, turn right onto Rue Denfert Rochereau and head towards the Tour Saint-Ferjeux.

(6) Continue left along the ramparts. Pass in front of the funicular and arrive at the Tour Henri IV. Go down the passage on the left and turn left (Rue du Grand Cloître) up to Place Diderot.

(7) Turn left (Rue Diderot) and walk past the former Jesuit college. Pass one junction, then take the next right onto Place Jenson, heading towards Saint-Martin Church. Turn left behind the church and immediately take Rue Forgeot on the left; you will find yourself facing the municipal theatre (the former Oratorian Chapel), with a fountain and a square.

(8) Take the street to the left of the theatre, Rue de la Comédie. At the end of the street, at No. 31, is the former seminary. Walk past it, turning right (Rue Lombard). At a mansion, keep right again (Rue Auguste Laurent).
