Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the town hall and church in Eppe-Sauvage.

(S/E) Turn left and go around the church on the left. When you reach the RD83 (Rue de Verdun), turn left and cross the bridge over Montbliart.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin de la Haie de Beaumont, which is closed to motor vehicles. You will arrive at the edge of Bois de Starchon.

(2) Pass the Fagnette house on your left and continue into the forest.

(3) Pass the house with blue shutters and cross the footbridge over the small stream, then join the road just at the border. Turn left and then immediately right onto the grassy path. After less than 400 metres, you will reach a T-junction. Turn left and follow the path, which becomes the tarmac Chemin d'Irlande at the top (be careful of a dog that is sometimes loose near the farm).

(4) Turn left to move away from the border. At the next crossroads, turn left onto Rue de la Fontaine. After the houses, you will come to a crossroads.

(5) Turn right at the fire hydrant onto this path. Pass through the localities of Le Trou Colette and Rue Là-Haut before joining the D119 road. Turn left.

(6) Turn right at the St Ursmer chapel and shortly afterwards, take the path on the right; this is a yellow-markedPR®® which descends towards some ponds and becomes the Chemin du Petit Moulin.

(7) Continue right on the road, Rue de Granrieu, which climbs to the right. Before the houses, leave the road and follow a path on the left which serves as a shortcut and leads to a brick chapel.

(8) Turn left onto Rue de Granrieu and continue for 400 m, then turn right. Follow the signs that take you back to Les Rocquettes via the birdwatching trail. Take this trail, staying on the edge of Lac de Val Joly. You will arrive at Maison du Val Joly, where you will rejoin theGRP®® du Tour de l'Avesnois.

(9) Take it on the right, following the red and yellow markings, and go around the equestrian centre on the right to enjoy the view. Join and continue on theGRP®, crossing the D133 bis. Take the road opposite, Chemin de Nostrimont, to join the RD 83. Turn left and follow it along a grassy strip until you reach the border.

(10) Turn right towards the campsite, then enter the woods on the left. At the Touvent picnic area, keep to the right and continue on theGR®® de Pays marked yellow on red, which descends into a small valley. Reach the houses at the edge of the woods.

(11) Go through a chicane and turn onto the path furthest to the right. Continue and use a
small bridge; climb straight ahead, passing a few stone markers. A chicane leads you to a wide forest path, the Chemin Vert.

(12) Continue left on the Green Path until you reach the edge of the woods at a Y-shaped crossroads.

(13) Walk along the edge of the woods on the right, then re-enter the woods via a chicane on the left. Walk along the edge of the woods. Cross a footbridge, then a wooden bridge and another small footbridge. The path is lined with a beech hedge. You will arrive at the Chemin de Vivier crossroads.

(14) Leave the woods via a chicane, continue left on Chemin de Vivier to reach the crossroads of a dead-end road that supports the GR®125LLiaison Sivry-Rance.

(15) Turn right. The road becomes a gravel path, runs alongside a wood and leads to two ponds.
Turn left, still onthe GR®®125LLiaison Sivry-Rance.

(16) Enter the woods again on the right. You are now on an interpretive trail.GR®®125LLiaison Sivry-Rance. Continue, ignoring the paths on the right and left. Leave the forest via a wide grassy path lined with hornbeams. Join the Route de France.
(17) Turn left onto the road until you reach the turning stone. Continue right onto a forest pathGR®®125LLiaison Sivry-Rance. Follow an almost straight path to the edge of the woods, near the Fromont farm.

(18) Turn left, then right twice in succession; take care on this road. Now follow theGR®® marked in white on red to reach the Rue de la Borne crossroads.

(19) Turn right onto this street towards the Bois des Bruyères woods to quickly reach a crossroads at the edge of the woods.

(20) Enter the woods on the left and walk along the meadows. After a bend to the right, you will find yourself back at the edge of the woods in another bend.

(21) Leave the edge of the woods and follow the path opposite, which leads back into the woods. Cross a few ditches and then take Chemin de Vivier on the left. You will come out at the crossroads with Rue Lobet.

(22) Turn left and walk through the houses in the El Lodwène neighbourhood. Stay on this street, enter the woods again and you will soon come to a crossroads.

(23) Turn right onto this path, which quickly makes a 90° left turn to return to the French-Belgian border crossroads you passed on the way out.

(4) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction and you will easily return to the car park where you started, near the town hall and church of Eppe-Sauvage (S/E).

I am an official FFRP marker and I work twice a year on this circuit to maintain the markings on the French side and to report any problems (litter, logging, etc.) on behalf of the department.

The map layout is very good, but I have noticed a few errors or inaccuracies in the description.

The main error is between 3 and 4 (reported indirectly by Mr Cousin). After the footbridge, you quickly reach the road right at the border, and that's where the error is: you have to turn LEFT and then immediately RIGHT, as indicated by the arrow on the information sign, onto the grassy path that is marked with yellow bars like the entire French part of the circuit (rectangular yellow plaques on the Belgian side). There is no barrier at the entrance to this path. In less than 400 m, you will reach a T-junction where you turn left up the path which becomes the tarmac "Chemin d'Irlande" at the top (watch out for a dog that is sometimes loose near the farm).

At numbers 4 and 5 Rue de la Fontaine, a good landmark is the fire hydrant with a "turn right" arrow: you will enter a path with an information board at its entrance.

At 6, turn right at the St Ursmer chapel and shortly afterwards take the path on the right.

At 8, turn left onto Rue de Granrieu for 400 metres and turn right onto the path indicated by a wooden sign fixed to an electricity pole.

At 9, I would rather go around the equestrian centre on the right (yellow markers) to enjoy the view. You will reach the GRP.

Forestry work has recently resumed between 3 and 4 beyond the road: it is possible to reach point 5 by road, as can be clearly seen on the route (Route de Montbliart then Rue de la Fontaine in the opposite direction).

I believe these details are necessary and do not detract from the quality of the work carried out by the designer of this description, given the length of the circuit.

Hello,

I recently completed the "La Transylvestre" hiking trail.

Visorando's description is a valuable source of information to help you avoid making mistakes.

Personally, I bought the Belgian IGN map "Sivry - Rance", number 57/1-2.

* Website: www.ngi.be

I then scanned it and saved it in PDF format. I then transferred numbers 01 to 23 onto this map.

This gave me a 1:25,000 scale IGN map (1 cm on the map = 25,000 cm on the ground, or 250 metres), which allows me to know exactly where I am.

Special features: passage between point 3 and point 4:

Please note that when coming from point 03 and heading towards point 04, when you reach the French-Belgian border at "Montbliard", there is a hiking trail on the left. This trail does not inspire confidence:

- There is a barrier,

- There are no hiking signs (not even a yellow line),

- This small path has not been cleared.

But appearances can be deceiving. You should take this path through the woods. After a few hundred metres, you will come to a junction:

- Either you go straight ahead and arrive in Belgium (point number 23),

- or you turn left and arrive in France - number 04 - (Chemin des Irlandais, which then leads to Rue de la Fontaine, which then leads to number 05 and then number 06)

One of the most beautiful hiking trails I have ever walked.

Yours sincerely,

Philippe COUSIN

A pleasant hike through the forest and the bocage countryside of Thiérache, Avesnois and the Belgian Ardennes. A few slopes may leave you breathless, but overall the hike is very flat. There are many birdwatching spots and interesting species to discover!
