Description of the walk

Parking is easy around Saussy church.

(S/E) Head towards the east end of the church, pass in front of the town hall and turn left into Rue de l'École. At the end, turn right and follow the small road that leads to Chaignay. A little further on, pass the cemetery on your right and you will arrive at the three-way junction at the Calvary, marked by trees.

(1) Turn right onto the good white road; at the top of the plateau, it opens up magnificent views over the plain. You will arrive at the edge of the forest and a large three-way intersection.

(2) Take the leftmost path to follow Chemin de Côte Guillaume, marked by a sign on a tree. Enter the forest on this good gravel path, which descends very slightly. Continue in the same direction until you reach a clearing and an intersection.

(3) Turn onto the path on the left, almost opposite. Continue along this path, which becomes a dirt track with a few ruts. Note the sign for "Combet de Côte Guillaume" on the left at the first crossroads and continue for a few dozen metres to reach a second crossroads.

(4) Turn left. The path descends and arrives at another fork where you should take the left-hand path: there is a small stone marker at the fork. The path then descends rapidly down the slope and arrives at a clearing below Combet de Côte Guillaume. At this point, descend the steep slope, which is slippery in wet weather, to reach the bottom of the valley.

(5) From there, climb about 100 m to the left and take the path on the right. Climb the thalweg, which has a moderate slope at this point, to reach a recess between cliffs, largely hidden by vegetation.

(6) Just after the rocks, cross two small steep sections and then follow the dirt track, which climbs very gently. Continue along this track until you reach a stony car park, then turn right to reach the Route de Chaignay 100 m higher up.

(7) Cross it and take the right track opposite. Further on, in an open area, you will come to a junction; take the left track. Follow it, ignoring all the lines that cross it, until you reach a good white track that supports the GR®7.

(8) A sign describes the attractions of the Biological Reserve just opposite, but turn right to admire the magnificent panorama of the Combe Quinquendolle.

(9) Then retrace your steps, following the GR®7.

(8) Continue straight ahead on the GR® and further on you will come to the Route de Chaignay at the site of the former Château des Charmes, now destroyed, with the equestrian centre that replaced it further on.

(10) Continue on the right and reach the junction of the road leading to it.

(11) Keep right on the GR®7, which runs alongside the small road and leads back to the three-way junction at the Calvary.

(1) Go straight ahead, pass the cemetery again, then turn right onto Rue des Champs to avoid retracing your steps. Continue along Grande Rue and return to the car park at the church (S/E).

Notes

You will see several signs along the way: "Danger of death, shooting from 1 October to 30 April". Don't panic, they date back to the time when planes from the Dijon Longvic air base used to practise on the Chaignay firing range. Those days are long gone and there is no longer any danger, the signs just haven't been removed!
