The Bredin towers at Saussy and Vernot

Circular route around Saussy, winding from valley to valley, which partly follows theGR® 7 and enters the regional nature reserve as well as the Is-sur-Tille State Forest.
It offers the chance to discover the curious history of the Bredin towers, designed to supply water to the village and the castle.
Also worth seeing is the magnificent umbrella-shaped roof structure of the riding school, built in the 19th century by the same architect (please book an appointment with the ASATS association on 0785742798 or 0786832079)

Description of the walk

Park in the cemetery car park and walk back towards the church.

(S/E) Walk past the church and turn left onto Rue de Dijon, which joins the D996. Continue along this county road to the right, walking on the hard shoulder.

(1) Turn right onto the farm track at the clump of trees (GR®7signpost). Follow this track as it enters the woods. At the end, turn left (GR®7signpost) and continue down into the Combe de Saussy.

(2) At the small gate marking the nature reserve, leave theGR®7and follow the sign for ‘Balcon du Val Suzon’ as you head up the Combe Charbonnière. At the top of this valley, turn left and follow the stony track. Pass the hunting lodge and continue straight on along this farm track until you reach a gate marking the nature reserve.

(3) Turn right until you reach the road, then turn right again. Walk for about 300 m along the road and turn left at the hedge marking the farm track. Enter the woodland and cross the clearing straight ahead. At the end of this path, turn right, then left at the plot boundary marked 11. Continue down the first section of the valley (about 800 m).

(4) Then turn left and head up this new valley.

(5) At the end, turn right onto the path leading uphill. At the junction, first turn left then right, and continue along this path, keeping to the right. At the stony path, turn left then right again. Leave the very grassy path and continue for 50 m.

(6) At the junction, turn left then right along the boundary of plot 26, then at the three-way junction, turn right. Walk down Combe Quarteron for about 800 m, then head up the left-hand side of this new valley until you reach the small road. Turn left until you reach an entrance to the equestrian centre. Walk there and back to see the riding arena.

(7) Retrace your steps back to the road.

(8) Cross the road and take the track opposite. Follow this track downhill; a little further on, it becomes the Route Forestière des Grolles.

(9) Walk past the viewpoint and continue downhill to the road. Turn left towards the village of Vernot. Walk past the wayside cross, the church and the wash house.

(10) Carry on straight along Route des Mousseneux until you reach the junction with the D996.

(11) Turn left and follow this road up until a few steps before the first white marker indicating the bend.

(12) Turn right onto a narrow, barely visible path (feel free to use the Visorando app to check you’re on the right path) which leads into the small strip of trees to reach the boundary between the field and the woodland. As you emerge from this copse, continue straight on along this boundary for about 60 m, then turn left and cross the grassy area to reach the path that leads into the woods.

(13) At the boundary marker, turn left and follow the path uphill to the Mousseneux Forest House.

(14) At the forest ranger’s house, cross the D996 and take the path opposite that leads uphill.

(15) Walk past the reservoir and continue up the valley.

(16) At the top of the valley, turn left to pass between the wash house and the reservoir. There is an information board next to the reservoir. Carry on, then turn right onto the road.

(17) Walk past the Saussy tower, then turn left twice and follow signs for Chaignay until you reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

The walk is mainly along forest trails, making it very pleasant in hot weather.
However, do check before setting out during the hunting season.
Please note that many of the paths shown on the map no longer exist following the creation of the nature reserve.

Worth a visit

Paul Bredin’s 19th-century riding school. The manager of the equestrian centre has confirmed by telephone that this site is open to the public; please do not go beyond the access path to the riding school.
The Mousseneux Tower reservoir and the Saussy Tower, also designed by Paul Bredin.

A route that includes sections on public roads which could easily have been avoided. The shade is pleasant in hot weather.

We completed this route in 5 hours and 40 minutes, including a lunch break at the viewpoint just past the merry-go-round during a spell of intense heat. The route takes place mainly in the woods, so it was perfect for the weather.
The description and GPS route are generally accurate, except – as mentioned in previous comments – between points 5 and 6. However, we had no trouble finding our way using the map.
The climbs are relatively steep (14% according to our GPS) but are manageable and not slippery in dry weather. There are a few sections along paths with tall grass which were rather unpleasant; perhaps these paths are better maintained at other times of year. The section along the departmental road poses no problems as there is very little traffic.

Overall, the walk is excellent; the varied scenery and the elevation changes make it a more challenging and interesting hike.

Thank you for this walk.

A lovely walk in the forest with a beautiful route. We were disappointed by the lack of clear signposting at some of the junctions; luckily we had the app on our phone with GPS to help us find our way...!
Thank you
