The Tower of Olmeto

A short walk along the coast path from Furnellu Beach to the Tower of Olmeto and back via the same route.
This path is a firm favourite for families on Sunday afternoons. It’s a sandy, almost flat path and very easy to walk.
Depending on the season, you can pick myrtle, arbutus, juniper berries or everlasting flowers along the way.

Description of the walk

Coming from Sartène, turn right onto the Route du Furnellu about 900 metres before the Monaccia d’Aullène junction on the T40; there is a yellow sign at the entrance to the concrete track, which runs for a few dozen metres. The dirt track is passable by car all the way to the beach and the Furnellu car park.

(S/E) Take the path on the right as you face the sea. There is a ‘No Entry’ sign (except for residents).
The path is marked in yellow.
A few dozen metres further on, you’ll come to a ruin, around which a few boats and windsurf boards are stored or have been abandoned.
Opposite, at the water’s edge, is a wall with three stones serving as steps.
Climb these; a wide, sandy path begins there and continues almost straight on to the Tour d’Olmetto.

(1) Continue along the path to reach Pointe du Canisgionu.

(2) Return via the same path to reach the car park at Furnellu beach (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : mi 0 - alt. 0 ft - Furnellu Beach car park
  2. 1 : mi 1.05 - alt. 39 ft - Olmeto Tower
  3. 2 : mi 1.27 - alt. 7 ft - Pointe du Canisgionu
  4. S/E : mi 2.45 - alt. 0 ft - Furnellu Beach car park

Notes

Please note: the Tower of Olmeto is not in Olmeto but in Monaccia d’Aullène. It takes its name from a former orme grove that no longer exists.
In the summer months, there is a refreshment bar on the beach called the Kalliste.
Otherwise, there is no water along the route.

Worth a visit

Between (S/E) and (1) Panoramic view of Pointe des Bruzzi, the Sardinian coastline, the lion and the Roccapina Tower, the Prêtre Lighthouse and the Ilots des Moines reefs.
Swimming at Furnellu Beach and along the way.
(1) Olmetto Tower: not open to visitors.
(2) At Canisgionu Point there is a 9,000-year-old prehistoric site. From here, look north towards the Roccapina Tower and its lion, and west towards the Monks’ Islets reefs.

An easy walk for the whole family
On your way back from the beach, if you’re bothered by a few cow pats, head to the far end of the beach, climb a few metres up the rocks, then walk 200 metres along flat ground to reach a lovely little cove

Hello, and thank you for this lovely route!
We did this trip in April 2025, but if, like us, you’re driving a small hire car (Fiat 500), the track – with its large potholes – can be a bit risky… If that’s the case, park as soon as possible and carry on on foot to the start of the route, as this route is really lovely and it would be a shame to miss it.

A lovely walk, rounded off with a refreshing swim at Furnellu beach in the company of the cows.
