Description of the walk

Park in the convenient car park at the junction ofthe GR®74and the D 122 below Les Lavagnes.

(S/E) Turn left at the car park exit onto theGR®74, which is shared with theGRP® du Tour du Grand Saint-Loup. Continue through the copse along a stony path clearly marked in red and white to reach the junction with a track suitable for vehicles.

(1) Take this track opposite, which follows theGR®, pass a cistern and then climb up wide switchbacks to reach the trail junction.

(2) Leave theGR® here and continue climbing to the right along thePR® Yellow marked track until you reach the big bend at Cap de la Pousterle.

(3) Take the path on the left, via a protected access point, squeeze between the rocks and then descend the south-facing slope via a series of switchbacks, enjoying views of the plateaus cut by the River Hérault and the plain. Halfway down, you will reach theGR® crossroads.

(4) Take it to the right and continue the descent along a paved slanting street to reach Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert and Gellone Abbey.

(5) Take the same route back up, this time uphill, past Cap de la Crous and back to the previous crossroads.

(4) Continue straight ahead on theGR® trail, climbing slightly, and cross Combe Fournen to reach a circular loop with a superb view.

(6) Continue on theGR®, pass the site marked Calvaire des Trois Croix (only one can be seen at the edge of the path), before coming to the Hermitage of Notre-Dame du Lieu-Plaisant on the left.

(7) Take the well-markedGR® trail and continue climbing the switchbacks to pass the limestone and dolomite barrier that closes off the Beaume. Arrive at Cap de Ginestet and enjoy the view on both sides of the hike. Continue downhill to reach the trail junction you passed on the way there.

(2) Retrace your steps to return to the car park on the D 122 road (S/E).

Worth a visit

(5) Saint Guilhem-le Désert and its hilltop castle, which can be seen from above.

(7) The Hermitage of Notre Dame du Lieu-Plaisant or Belle-Grâce is inhabited and therefore cannot be visited. A picnic area is available for hikers in front of the building. The history of the place is displayed on the chapel door.
It stands alone in the middle of the Séranne massif, composed of ruiniform massifs of dolomite and limestone emerging from vegetation of holm oaks and Salzman pines, with the occasional solitary cypress tree.

Given our schedule—setting off in the morning, having sandwiches in St Guilhem and heading back in the afternoon—it wasn’t the easiest of plans! The return journey is much tougher, though not impossible, and with the food to digest…
This walk avoids the car parks at St Guilhem. Lots of varied scenery, very pleasant and not very busy: but it was a Monday!

i left Montardier for Saint Guilhem le Désert in three days. The last day, from Saint Martin la Vacquerie to Saint Guilhem, was superb!

Hike completed on Thursday, 7 March 2024, so there weren't many people on the route. However, we decided to do the circular route in reverse, starting at point No. 2, and enjoyed some beautiful views. Given the return trip, I think it's just as beautiful on both sides, and the climb back seems a bit easier to me!

A popular route between St Guilhem and the Belle Grace hermitage! Already crowded in St Guilhem (tourists!). The LaRD 122 is difficult (narrow, winding, long, especially with a van like ours!). We would have preferred to park in St Guilhem and do the PR (5-4-6-7-2-3-4-5) as the D-1-2 section isn't the most interesting and you have to do it twice! But it's a beautiful hike with St Guilhem, which is a lovely village, and the mountain environment is spectacular!

The route via La Chapelle is interesting. Avoid hiking in hot weather. There is no water along the route.

The Saint Guilhem mountains are always a delight to explore, in every direction. There were quite a few people approaching Saint Guilhem, so we didn't go there and were happy with this lovely circular route instead. It's also worth trying in the other direction, particularly for the descent of La Gineste.

I continued further than indicated and therefore arrived almost at the ruins: magnificent
But some people coming from St Guilhem told me it was forbidden and dangerous, although there were no signs in the direction I was going
and, frankly, if you're careful, it's really worth it.
