Park your vehicle at Col de la Cluse.
From the Col de la Cluse to La Roche Veyrand (1,429 m), the normal route is fairly straightforward; simply follow the directional signs, which are clearly marked with yellow markings.
But on a sunny day, it is tempting to try a more adventurous route.
Looking at the map beforehand, you can see that there is a north-south route between the Roc de Gleisin cliff and the traditional path, both of which are less than a kilometre apart.
(S/E) From the car park, take out your compass and altimeter, then set off along the usual path and change direction after 100 metres.
(1) Turn right into the woods. Then walk south-west, staying as close to the ridge as possible.
(2) On the ridge, you will need to go around fallen trees and piles of rocks, not to mention depressions. You should also avoid rocky outcrops.
Fortunately, from time to time, a logging road makes progress easier, but these roads are far from being all marked on the map. Reach the edge of the cliff.
(3) Turn south to follow the edge of the cliff.
After a long series of zigzags and another series of ascents and descents, you will join the classic route a few dozen metres before the summit cross.
(4) Reach the summit cross. At the summit, there is little space, but a beautiful panorama.
For the return journey, head for the signpost below the cross, leaving the route to Saint-Pierre-d'Entremont on your right and continuing straight on towards the Col du Cucheron. The yellow markings are unambiguous.
(5) From Grand Jet (signs at 1200m), continue straight on to Col du Cucheron (1215m).
(6) From Col du Cucheron, it takes 10 minutes to reach Col de la Cluse and the car park, following the edge of the path, which in winter is also a cross-country ski trail (S/E).
