From La Plagne to the Chalet de l'Alpe or Habert Saint-Vincent

This is a snowshoe hike with no specific markings for this activity; however, theGR® 9 markings do exist, though they are less visible in winter conditions
The appeal of this hike lies not in the markings but rather in the atmosphere you experience along the route across the plateau.

Description of the walk

La Plagne hamlet car park.

(S/E) From the car park, take the path leading uphill. The first 300 metres are a gentle climb up to a junction.

(1) Take the path on the left. In the woods, the gradient is already a little steeper. You will then reach the junction with theGR®9.

(2) Turn right, staying in the woods, with sections where the gradient becomes steeper; this continues until you reach the Col de l'Alpette (1547 m).

(3) From the pass, head down towards the Cabane de l'Alpette.

(4) Continue towards a short, steep section which leads back into the forest for a pleasant walk. Let the path to the right, heading towards Le Pinet, pass you by and continue on theGR® to reach the plateau.

(5) Head generally south for a long traverse across the plateau. The traditional red and whiteGR® markings on the trees are here usefully supplemented by markers rising approximately 1.20 m above the snow level. This takes you to the Chalet de l'Alpe, also known as Habert de Saint-Vincent.

(6) From the chalets, an extension to the Croix de l'Alpe is possible if winter weather conditions permit. Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes for the round trip.

Otherwise, take the reverse route of the outward journey to return to the car park (S/E).

A wonderful snowshoe hike on a sunny day with lovely snow. At the Col de l'Alpette, some ibex were posing for photos! We had a picnic at the Chalet de l'Alpe in the sunshine, wearing just T-shirts in February! On the way back, the ibex had invited their chamois friends along!

A steady climb leading up to the magnificent plateau and its groves of trees. Avoid straying from the tracks; there are karstic caves in the vicinity. We turned back before reaching the Chalet de l'Alpe; there was over 50 cm of powder snow, so snowshoes were essential. Tracks led to the Croix de l'Alpe and its spectacular views.

Today's hike. A stunning spot when you emerge from the forest above the Alpette chalets. I didn't go all the way to the pass; I preferred to head up towards the Croix de l'Alpe to enjoy the breathtaking view!

Highlights of the route: exceptional. All that peace and quiet amidst this vast expanse of white, glistening in the sun.
After Habert St Vincent, it would be a shame not to ‘push on’ to the Croix de l’Alpe: a magnificent panoramic view.

On this day, there were large patches of slushy snow (i.e. on the rocks) over the first third of the hike. Not ideal for snowshoes....

Thanks for this post
