Park in Ougney la Roche in the small car park opposite the fountain. Most of the route is unmarked. Yellow and blue markings.
(S/E) Facing the fountain, turn right into the cul-de-sac, passing in front of an inn. Look up for a glimpse of the Rechandet rock where we are heading. Don't miss the beautiful statue of Saint Peter at the corner of the inn. The path quickly becomes stony. Continue along this beautiful path alongside the river for about 2 km. When you reach the open, you will discover beautiful views of the Château de Roulans, the Notre-Dame d'Aigremont mountain topped by its chapel, and the jagged rocks of Mont de Souvence overlooking Laissey. From time to time, take a quick look at the wooded hillside on your left, especially when the trees are bare, as you may spot some chamois.
(1) At the fork at the foot of Mont de Souvence, continue along the stony path that climbs to the left towards the main road, which you will cross to continue along the path opposite.
(2) Cross the main road again and continue along the path opposite. A little further up, there is a fork in the path. Continue climbing to the left. At the top, after the path has passed between a small rock gorge, you will arrive at the signpost for the ruins of Château de Vaite (465m).
(3) Descend to the left for about twenty steps, leaving the marked trail, to climb up the forest path on the left. At the stone path, continue to the left, rejoining the marked trail. 300m further on, leave this path and the marked trail to climb up the grassy forest path on the left, leaving the cart tracks on the right and left. On the right, there are views of the plateau. At the top, you will come to a crossroads of forest paths. Continue along the path opposite, which is well cleared.
(4) You will soon come to a small gravel road (and the markings) which you take to the left. Quickly, at an old rusty "private property" barrier, climb up the forest path that branches off to the right and crosses through recently cut areas. On the left, there is a view of the wind turbines.
(5) You will pass a high-voltage pylon and come to a more pleasant path that enters the woods and runs along the ledges. You will reach a recently deforested area. At the end of it, there is a marker on an isolated tree. The path turns sharply to the left. Walk about 25 steps and, before the end of the bend, turn right towards a fir tree plantation. At the corner of the plantation, there is a fork in the path. Take the left fork. At the end of the path, there is a marker on a boundary stone and a forest sign marked No. 12. Continue straight ahead, staying on this path which runs parallel to the cliff edge.
(6) You will soon arrive at Rocher du Rechandet, an unsecured 180° viewpoint over the Doubs valley, from Besançon to Baume-les-Dames, Mont Souvance and Montagne Notre-Dame d'Aigremont, and on the right, the Vosges mountain range, which is not as blue as it seems! This viewpoint is unsecured but offers a beautiful, peaceful spot to enjoy a snack while taking in the view. Leave the viewpoint and continue along the line of cornices. Progress is somewhat hampered by trees felled by the wind this winter. I hope they will be removed quickly.
(7) After a short descent, you will come to a wider forest path, marked by a signpost (La Croix Guillermot, 551m). Turn left, passing to the right of a small metal cross. Continue along the path that turns sharply left to descend the wooded hillside.
(8) At the second hairpin bend, the path forks. Continue downhill to the left. When the forest thins out, you will have beautiful views of the rocks on the opposite bank. Reach the banks of the Doubs and our starting point, which you will take on the right to return to the village (S/E).
The route includes cliff-top paths and unsecured viewpoints. The paths are rocky and slippery in places. Sturdy footwear is essential and walking poles are recommended.
... (see Denisjean's comment above), trees have been cut down and the path is difficult to navigate in places!
