Parking at the entrance to Bretigney-Notre-Dame (coming from Dammartin-les-Templiers, at the beginning of Rue des Fontaines. Good quality yellow-blue and white-red markings.
(S/E) Pass in front of the beautiful fountain, then a second, very original one. Leave Rue du Muguet on your right, pass in front of the church and take the D112 towards Silley-Bléfond, where you will discover the old well with its slate roof. At another fountain, take the time to look to your right at the old Boillot inn, dating from 1826, with its painted sign and cul-de-four oven.
(1) Turn left onto Chemin d'Ougney and continue uphill along the path that extends it.
(2) In a more open area, join a path perpendicular to the left and climb up it. Enter the woods again. When the path begins to descend, ignore the path on your right. Join a gravel road and descend to the left. Ignore the forest paths on your right, even the one with markings. This is the new marked path, but I am taking you along the old one, which starts further down. Walk gently downhill until you reach a "No Entry" sign and a hunting car park. There are no markings for 1 km.
(3) Then turn right onto the old hiking trail. You will soon find the markings again. Leave the marked path that climbs up to the right and continue straight ahead. You will soon come to a fork and continue climbing to the right. At the top, the path becomes a beautiful gravel road.
(4) When it widens to form a large gravel area, look to your left for the signpost indicating that you should enter the woods via a forest path. You will soon reach the ridge line, at a crossroads in the shape of an X. Descend to the left despite the cross and you will find a white-red signpost.
(5) Leave this descending path when it turns sharply to head towards Roche Rechevet, which you can see through the trees. A small path can be seen in the grass and disappears at a tree bearing a yellow-blue cross. Continue climbing carefully to the right, without getting too close to the rocks. At the top, the path reappears and you will come to a yellow-blue marker and an unsecured viewpoint overlooking the upper Doubs valley and Baume-les-Dames.
Return to the marker and set off again to the left, carefully following the ledge. Twenty-five steps further on, you will see two new markers on a tree in the shape of a V. Pass between the branches of the V and climb the hill opposite, where you will find another marker about 50 metres further on. Then go around the hillock slightly to the right along a roughly marked path, following the markers. A short trail of closely spaced markers leads you to another hillock, then the path becomes clearer and leads you easily to the ridge.
(6) Then head left, walking along this beautiful ledge with its wild crevices and breathtaking views of the valley. The path moves away from the ledges and passes under the ruins of the old fortified castle.
(7) Shortly afterwards, at the X-shaped crossroads, continue straight downhill, following a pretty pile of stone gathered from fields towards Silley. Be careful! A little further down, at the next crossroads, look out for the sign pointing down to the right. At the small tarmac road, turn right towards the village.
(8) At the top of the village, continue along Rue de la Corvée, which quickly becomes a stony track. At the farm shed, continue straight ahead, crossing sunny meadows to Bretigney. Return to your car via Rue des Tilleuls to pass in front of the descent of the cross (S/E).
The route includes cliff-edge paths and unsecured viewpoints. The paths are rocky and slippery in places. Sturdy footwear is essential and walking sticks are recommended.
