La Roche de la Garde

A lovely little walk, mostly through woodland. The tarmac sections are along a quiet road. The view from the Rocher de la Garde is very pleasant.

Description of the walk

Head to the car park at the town hall in Saint-Étienne-de-Crossey.

(S/E) Take the road towards the church. Turn left onto Rue du Charrat and cross Rue du Tram (D49d) with care.

(1) Continue straight on for about 900 m until you reach Chemin du Rocher de la Garde on your right.

(2) Take the road on the right, which soon turns into a track. From here, follow the yellow markings.
Continue until you reach the Route des Gorges de Crossey (D520).

(3) Follow it to the left for about 50 m, then follow the signposted path which climbs to the left into the forest.
At the first junction, head up to the left, towards the rock.
At the next junction, continue up to the left until you reach the summit of the Rocher de la Garde.
Once you reach the cross, enjoy the view over Saint-Étienne-de-Crossey and Voiron, as well as the Vercors, the Sure and the Grand Som.

(4) Turn back to the last junction. Turn left towards Plantimey. When you reach the Plantimey sign, continue towards the Bois de Plantimey.

(5) Under the power line, turn right and then, further on, left until you come out into a clearing. Head for the entrance gate to Les Balmettes.

(6) Head left towards Saint-Aupre. Pass a hairpin bend on the right, then, about 100 m further down, take a small unmarked path on your left. This path overlooks the road. Continue to the Croix de l’Echaillon.

(7) Do not join the road, but follow the small path. Walk to a house.

(8) From there, go down the street on the right (Chemin des Communaux) to the Route de la Maladière. On your right, in the meadow, you will find a small chapel.

(9) Turn left, following the road, and rejoin the Chemin du Rocher de la Garde.

(2) Continue straight on, following the path in the opposite direction to the way out, and you will reach the town hall car park (S/E).

A pleasant short walk, done in the opposite direction to the description. The woodland is a welcome respite on hot days. Note that there is a short section with a cable, which can be slippery in wet weather. Beautiful views from the Rocher de la Garde.

It’s true that at this time of year the undergrowth isn’t as interesting.

I did this route recently; reaching the summit is nice, but the way back through the woods is a bit tedious. Thanks for the suggestion anyway!

Watch out for the rock at La Garde – there are two small crevasses

Personally, I preferred to do the route in reverse so that I could have a bite to eat at the top of Rocher de la Garde whilst taking in the view. We set off relatively early, but if you set off later, it is possible to have a bite to eat at the summit after an hour’s walk and then head back down the way indicated on the guidebook, bearing in mind that the descent is much longer than the ascent and takes place mainly through woodland. Please note that some yellow markers are missing at certain junctions, so a map and compass are useful. There is also an unmarked point of interest in the woods on the left before the end of the route. You can see traces of old structures and one or two deep cavities there; access is a bit dangerous and marked as private property.
