Water and iron trail in Fuilla

A pleasant outing along the Sahorre Canal and a historical walk among the remains of the iron route.

Caution for those prone to vertigo: although the path along the canal is generally good, from (5) there are places where you have to walk straddling the canal, on narrow footbridges and areas where the edge of the canal is very narrow. Alternative route possible.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park at the church in Fullà del Mig (Middle Fuilla).

(S/E) Follow the Chemin de Serdinya road for about 600 metres (south-west direction).
The trail is marked in yellow.

(1) Cross the Còrrec de les Cabanes, turning right.

(2) At the bend, leave the road and take the path on the left. Do not follow the yellow markings.

(3) At an altitude of 670 m, leave the path that climbs and take a beautiful, unmarked forest track on the left (south-west direction) which leads along the canal after a hundred metres. This canal leads to Sahorre, along a good path.

(4) When you reach a waterfall at Còrrec de les cabanes, go up the left bank (to the right of the canal), where the path is less visible. A little further on, you will come to a building. Walk alongside it to rejoin the canal and reach a road.

(5) From this point, the path along the canal may cause discomfort for those prone to vertigo.
There are two possible solutions:
- leave the canal and go down to the road, turning right at the fork to reach Sahorre via the D6.
- continue to follow the canal as described in the description.

(6) When you reach the road (Chemin de Fontanelle) at the top of the village of Sahorre, turn opposite and walk past the houses. Join the D6.

(7) Follow it to the right. Immediately after crossing the bridge over the Rotja, turn left onto Rue des Fontaines. Look for the yellow and red markings ofthe GRP® Ronde du Canigou.

(8) At the stop sign at the end of the street, follow theGRP® to the left onto the main road D27.
Be careful not to take thefirst right turn onto Chemin de Falgues.

(9) After about 400 m on the D27, leave the road and take a path on the right that climbs uphill, still on theGRP®. Pass in front of the remains of a mining site (els Miners), magnificent with its reel (drum). Continue along the uphill track to Coll de Vernet.

(10) At the crossroads at the pass (altitude 784 m), leave the track and theGRP® and take the path downhill, heading north. Cross the D27 road and continue opposite. Take the track or path just above.

(11) Continuing along the ridge, you will arrive at the Chapelle Saint-Climent de la Serra (St Clément de la montagne). Then continue northwards to the Dolmen de la Coberturat at an altitude of 629 metres.

(12) At the crossroads, take the track that descends to the left, towards Fulla (west-northwest) to the place called el Pont, then join the D6 road.

(13) Cross the bridge over the Rotjà and go up along the road to the Fulla del Mig car park (S/E).

Hello,
I am a certified federal guide and I am surprised by your response because, looking at an IGN map with contour lines and altitudes, it is impossible for the elevation gain to be as stated. This comment about the elevation gain is not for me but for Visiorandoneurs who might do this hike without having the necessary level of fitness...
Kind regards
René RAY

Hello,

I would like to remind you (once again) that all measurements are subject to error. This is particularly true when estimating altitudes with devices that record a route (apps, watches, etc.). As a result, the elevation estimates provided by these devices are very inaccurate.

The Visorando software has a function for calculating altitudes based on a dense grid of points at known altitudes. On the hike sheet, select Actions/Recalculate altitudes. I have just activated this function for this hike: the estimated elevation gain is around 320 m, which is consistent with the information provided by Doumic and with the elevation profile of the hike.

No, the elevation gain is approximately 330 metres, not 640 as you say. I've done this hike twice with Visorando and the elevation gain was between 327 and 324 metres the second time. In reality, it's practically flat along the canal. There's only a small climb after Sahorre.

The stated elevation difference is incorrect because the difference between the highest and lowest points is 280 m, whereas there is a steep climb after Sahorre. Visiorando gave me a figure of 640 m instead of the stated 319 m, which could cause significant problems...

Very beautiful hike. It's a shame that the canals are not very well maintained.

A very pleasant walk along the irrigation canal.
A few tricky spots, but nothing dangerous if you pay a little attention.
The only downside is the return trip on the tarmac road....

The path you took must have led you to the edge of a farm. Did you cross it to reach the ford near the town hall? Were the gates open?

Superb hike, very varied route.
The section along the river is very pleasant but has three tricky spots where the path has more or less collapsed. Caution is advised. But the rest is easy if you don't suffer from vertigo. We shortened the hike to avoid returning along the tarmac roadside from the Rotja bridge to Fuilla del Mig. To do this, we took the small path that descends just to the left of the dolmen instead of taking the track higher up on the left.
