The Bay of Lorient on foot and by water bus

This hike combines walking (12 km) and water bus crossings. Board the boat to Pen Mané and follow the coastal path to the ramparts of Port Louis. Board the boat again to reach Keroman and walk through the streets of Lorient to Quai des Indes.

Remember to check the water bus timetable in advance (see the link in the practical information section).

You will be hiking through natural and private sites. Stay on the marked paths and respect nature, facilities and cultivated land. For your comfort and safety, make sure you have the appropriate hiking equipment.

Description of the walk

Departure: Quai des Indes in Lorient, parking on the quays and in the adjacent streets.

(S/E) Take the water bus towards Locmiquelic and the port of Pen Mané.

(1) When you get off the boat, walk up Rue de Trémaré, then turn right at the car park and left to reach Rue de Pen Mané. Continue straight ahead until you reach Rue de la Douane on the right.

(2) Take this street, then follow Rue du Rivage on the left. Turn right onto the path that runs along the coast and go around Pointe du Bigot before returning to the street.

(3) Follow it to the right, then take the coastal path on the right to Quai Rallier du Baty.

(4) Continue straight ahead and pass Sainte Catherine harbour. Follow Rue du Port and turn right after the car park. At the end, turn right, then right again onto Rue du Rollo and Rue Jean Lebas to reach Rue Victor Hugo.

(5) Turn left and go down Rue de Verdun on the right to rejoin the coastal path, which you follow to the left until you reach Rue de Kerchicagne.

(6) Turn right to join the footpath running parallel to Rue Jean-Baptiste Guiheneuc. Follow this path, which runs along the coastline, around the Pointe de Kerzo and on to the Port Louis cemetery.

(7) Continue along Rue de la Digue. Turn right along the stadium to reach Boulevard de la Compagnie des Indes.

(8) Go under the bridge and turn left up Rue Saint-Pierre. Go around the church on the left and take Rue de la Grande Porte on the left. Stay on this street until you reach the coastal path.

(9) Follow Promenade du Lohic ahead of you, which runs along the ramparts on your right. Continue straight ahead until you pass the ramparts again.

(10) At the end of the path, turn left onto Promenade Henri-François Buffet and continue straight ahead for two crossroads. Then keep left until you reach the citadel.

(11) At the citadel, follow the ramparts along the coastal path, which will take you to the Port de la Pointe.

(12) Take the water bus towards the Port de Pêche stop in Lorient.

(13) When you disembark, turn right and then opposite onto Rue du Bout du Monde and walk up Avenue de la Perrière to Pont de Carnel.

(14) Cross the bridge and take the first right onto Rue du Calvaire. Turn left into the square to go behind the gymnasium, then turn right and make a first turn left then right to continue on Rue de la Bourdonnais. Take the second right onto Rue Alfred de Musset, then turn left at the end onto Boulevard de la République. Follow this road to the roundabout.

(15) Head towards Rue Gilles Gahinet, the second exit on the left. Walk along the car parks and pass in front of the ferry terminal. Cross the shipyard to the left of the pier and turn left to walk along the quays. Continue straight ahead until you reach Pont François le Corre.

(16) Cross to the right to reach Quai de Rohan and turn right towards your starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

  • Bassin à flot (1870): quays of the Cie des Indes goods storage warehouses (18th century); military site (19th-20th centuries); Maison de l'Agglomération (2014).
  • Port of Sainte Catherine:islet with Gallo-Roman villa, Franciscan convent (15th century) and jetty, hospital (19th century), estate of explorer Raymond Rallier du Baty (1925); port with ferry to Lorient since 1834.
  • Château and Pointe de Kerzo:18th-century fort; pleasure palace (1878, two towers preserved).
  • Le Driasker: jetty (2008); former district of shipwrights and carpenters; dyke (1907); port of La Pointe by Louis XIII (1618); sardine port inthe 19th century; tuna port inthe 20th century.
  • Grand'rue and Rue de la Grande Porte: shopping streets in Port-Louis; St-Pierre Church (11th century, rebuilt in the16th and19th centuries ).
  • Le Lohic:Papegaut bastion (1649-1653); Saint-François (19th century) and Prisonniers towers; canning factory district (16th-20th centuries ).
  • Citadel of Port-Louis (16th century):ramparts (1649-1653); large powder magazine (1750-1752); now home to the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes and the Musée National de la Marine.
  • Île Saint-Michel: former priory (12th-15th centuries); now a military site.
  • Avenue de la Perrière:road to the stone quarry (17th century); backbone of the port area after 1945; Keroman fishing port and Kergroise commercial port (1920); Lorient La Base tourist and cultural site.
