The Pointe du Grouin circular tour from La Gaudichais

This route follows part of the GR®34 along the coast, an old customs officers' path, and the trails that cross the point between the hamlet of Le Verger and Cancale. The route offers beautiful views of the bay of Mont Saint-Michel and a string of islands to the west. In good weather, you can see Cap Fréhel.

Description of the walk

Departure from the small car park located at La Gaudichais, which is quite popular during the season.

Yellow markings

(S/E) Leaving the car park, take the road on the right to cross the D201. Continue straight ahead, making a slight first turn left then right. Passing in front of the equestrian centre, at the crossroads, go straight downhill on a dirt track.

(1) When you reach Rue de la Vieille Rivière, continue straight ahead. Take the first street on the left, uphill. Then take a path on the right.

(2) At the intersection, take the road on the right and go under the bridge. Descend to the port.

Red and white GR® markings

(3) Turn left and go up the hill, then continue along the path. Stay along the coast and pass the point to reach Port Mer Beach.

(4) Walk along the beach and after a short climb, turn right. Stay along the coastline, pass Barbe Brulée, and continue on the path to Pointe du Grouin.

(5) Take the opportunity to explore the point, then return to the crossroads and rejoin the GR® and the path that continues to the right. Pass Pointe de Roche Froide and join the D201.

(6) Walk along the D201, staying behind the guardrail on the right. Continue along the path on the right for about 600 metres to reach Plage du Saussaye. Be careful of the current.

(7) Continue along the coastal path to reach Pointe de la Mouliére (beautiful view).

(8) On the way back, take the path that runs along the right-hand side of the ocean to Verger Beach. At the crossroads, turn right to stay along the beach.

(9) Follow this path and, at the car park exit, take the path on the right that climbs towards Pointe des Daules. Go around the point and take the path opposite towards the Corps de Garde, visible on the hill.

Yellow markings

(10) From the Corps de Garde, continue towards the Plage du Verger car park below. Cross the car park carefully and, at the end of the road, take the road on the left, then the street on the right that leads to the small chapel visible below. Continue along the path that turns right and, at the end of the path, turn right to go up the road for 100 metres.

(11) Take the farm track that slopes gently downhill on the far left. Continue along the track downhill, then uphill, and turn left.

(12) At the intersection with a path, take it to the right to reach the place called La Gaudichais. At the first crossroads, turn left and join the road.

(13) Take the dirt track opposite, follow it to the road and then turn left to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Toilets: Pointe du Grouin and Plage du Verger at the car park.

Some fairly steep sections on rocks, so wear sturdy footwear.
Keep a close eye on children, as the paths are sometimes narrow and run along the edge of cliffs.

On the GR® trail, respect the protected areas.

Worth a visit

The Verger Chapel
Notre-Dame-du-Verger pilgrimage chapel (Cancale). This small neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1869 by Canon Brune on the site of an ancient sanctuary. The stained glass windows, dating from 1910 to 1913, are the work of Charles Lorin, a glass painter from Chartres. Numerous ex-votos bear witness to the piety of seafaring families. It overlooks the beach at Le Verger.

-La Pointe du Grouin

The Guardhouse: Pointe des Daules is home to a former guardhouse dating from the time of Vauban in themid-18th century. It is located a little way back (120 metres) and upstream from the point, and can be accessed via a footpath. The building consists of a barrel-vaulted chamber adjoining a square watchtower, which is accessed via an external staircase.

A very pleasant outing.
A small detour was necessary, but without consequences, via Verger beach after heavy rain (flooded path).
