La Pierre Folle in Saint-Priest-la-Feuille

Here is a short, easy route, at the centre of which stands a fabulous megalith, complete with its inevitable array of curses and frightening legends. The route consists of tracks, a stretch of road and a path, and is combined with a fitness trail between the dolmen and the village.

Description of the walk

From La Souterrainne, take the D10 towards Saint-Priest-la-Feuille. Park in the car park in front of the inn.

(S/E) First follow the main street towards the town hall and, after 30 metres, take a stony path that starts to the right of the street and runs straight ahead alongside the town hall, bordered by hedges. It leads to the “eco-park”, which features several trails and marks the start of a fitness trail with exercise equipment. The route heads straight on, taking the shortest of these paths and cutting across the park. This brings you to a road, near a small pond. Follow the road to the right until the next junction. Then follow the small road on the right for about 20 metres until you reach a path leading left into the Bois du Curé.

(1) Follow this path, which zigzags between the embankments and the fitness equipment before emerging onto a track. Continue along this track to the left; further on, it curves to the right and ends at the edge of a field. A path then branches off to the left and runs straight ahead along a copse. A footbridge allows you to easily cross a damp section and reach a clearing dominated by the dolmen.

(2) From the dolmen, head down the main path which skirts a copse, crosses a narrow stream via a stone slab, and joins a car park and a road. Then follow the road to the right for a good distance (approx. 600 m) until you reach the next track.

(3) Head down this track. It leads across fields, taking a sharp right-hand bend a little further on. You’ll reach a junction.

(4) Ignore the track branching off to the left and continue straight on, passing by the dolmen. You’ll emerge in the hamlet of La Feuille and head up the street on the left, which leads further on to a road. Once on this road, continue to the right to reach the village of Saint-Priest-la-Feuille and your starting point (S/E).

Notes

The start is marked by an information sign.
Parking is available nearby, in the car park next to the inn. Alternatively, about 200 m away, in the car park on the other side of the school.
Following tree felling, the route no longer benefits from the shade provided by the forest canopy: take care during periods of intense heat.
The first part of the route also forms part of a fitness trail marked in green.
The dolmen clearing is an ideal spot for a picnic.

Worth a visit

Saint-Laurent Church: it dates back to the 13th century. It is built on a basilica plan and consists of a nave with two bays and a flat-ended chancel, remodelled in the 17th century. Of particular note are the carved modillions adorning the cornice, a coat of arms engraved on the north wall of the sacristy, and the two granite blocks at the entrance, which are likely altar bases of Gallo-Roman origin.

The Pierre Folle dolmen (2): a fabulous dolmen, the Pierre Folle is steeped in a history of curses and legends, which can be explored on the information panel located in the site’s car park. The dolmen was excavated and looted long ago, and has also been damaged by the ‘breakage’ of one of its original pillars. Until then, the dolmen’s capstone rested on a delicate balance that kept it ‘wobbly’: it could be made to sway by the strength of one’s arm. Since the incident involving the pillar, however, this phenomenon can no longer be observed.

The signposting at the start could be improved (crossing the grassy area)
Otherwise, a pleasant, easy route, ideal for families. The area around the dolmen has been beautifully landscaped.

The village is lovely and has a very good restaurant.
The heritage society allowed us to visit the church; we thank them.
The little wash house 500 metres from the village deserves to be better showcased.
However, the signposting isn’t very clear, and in particular, the start of the walk in the village isn’t marked. A sign should be placed at the start of the path to indicate the general direction.

Unfortunately, as noted in the description, much of the route is on open roads, so be careful of the heat on sunny days....

A lovely short route that’s easy enough for the whole family to enjoy
A lovely way to experience the region’s countryside, enhanced by facilities for sports enthusiasts
The only downside is an old illegal tip in a wood along the route. Despite this issue, the walk is still well worth doing
