The Devil's Gorge or Teufelsschlucht

The Devil's Gorge was formed towards the end of the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago, following one or more rock collapses. Gorges, faults and crevasses make up the rock formations of the Ferschweiler plateau.

Description of the walk

Parking at the end of Rue Flurstrabe, very close to Der Felsenwieher.

(S/E) Go up the road until you reach a path on your right and take it. Look for the stairs on your left, go around the barrier and climb up. Walk along the rocks and you will end up above the Der Felsenwieher water basin. Go down the stairs and continue along the path to the left.

Markings: Stylised leaf in 3 parts
Note: For some, the markings resemble a brown path winding between two masses of forest. At the bottom, turn right, cross the bridge and immediately turn left. At the fork, turn right and at the cluster of three trees, turn right. Exit the forest. Ignore the two paths on your right and continue to the left. The path turns sharply to the right. Then ignore the path on your left and continue straight ahead. Further on, ignore the path on the right.

(1) Enter the forest, take the path on the left and at the fork, turn right. Descend the path between the rocks until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Turn right, cross a pontoon and go around the rocks. Take several flights of steps, then take the path on the left and climb over the rocks, taking more steps.

(3) Return to another path and turn right. Cross the stream, climb the embankment and continue to the right. Follow the path until you leave the forest. Turn right and take the farm track.

(4) Turn left at thefirst path you come to. Continue straight ahead. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead until you reach the road. Cross and follow the road to the right. Turn left at thefirst path and then enter the forest.

(5) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead for about 200 metres. Take the path on your left. Go down and, at the bottom, turn right. Ignore the pontoon. Continue, go down and up some more steps. Keep to your left, ignoring the path on your right. Pass in front of the Kelthenhohle cave. Cross the rocks, go around a huge stone and turn right to pass through the gap.

Pass under a large rock and go around the others. The path winds between the rocks of the gorge. Pass under another rock, perhaps on all fours. Exit the gorge and go down the stairs that lead to a more open part of the forest. At the fork (not shown on the map), take the left path and go down to the crossroads.

(6) Turn left and, at the bend, turn right onto the path.

(7) At the wide path, take the trail on the left along the rock and you will reach the Aussichtsfelsen viewpoint. Continue along the trail. Descend and climb up the various gorges. More stairs, pass the fault and enter the Devil's Gorge. Continue to the bottom of the stairs with the rock wedged between the two walls and climb up. Pass under the rocks. Climb more stairs. At the top, turn left.

(8) At the fork, continue to the right and then right again at the next fork. Climb the stairs and turn left at the fork.

(9) At the hut, on the heights, the path turns sharply to the right. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead. At the rock, turn left and go down the stairs. Continue to the picnic table. Turn right and take the stairs to go up to the road. Turn left onto the path behind the safety rail until you reach the bend. Cross before the bend, continue downhill and take thefirst road on the right. Cross the car park and take the path to the left of the barrier.

(10) Turn right at thefirst path you come to. Follow the path for about 1.7km.

(11) At the crossroads with a shelter, continue straight ahead. At the end of the path, climb a few steps to the right. A little further on is thefirst viewpoint over Echternach. Continue to the Liboire chapel. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the steps leading down. Then ignore the adjacent paths and trails for about 850m.

(12) At the crossroads, turn left. Go down the steps and turn left after the footbridge. Pass in front of a water reservoir.

(13) Take thefirst path on your right, go up, pass behind a bench, then go around a fallen tree and over another with a bench. The path then turns sharply to the right.

(14) At the top, take the path on the right. Then veer right again and walk along the last rocky outcrop, Stunbelay.

(15) Take the path on the right, join a forest track, continue to the right and climb up to the Der Felsenwieher car park (S/E).

A magnificent, fairly challenging route of around 19 km that is very well marked and which I recommend to any hiker who enjoys natural diversity.

Yes, I've already been to your site, but it was in the very early stages of development, and now it's well-stocked.
And indeed, like all good Belgians, we love the South of France.

In fact: the chapel is the other place where we met a few people!
The view over Echternach is interesting, I forgot to mention it in my comment 🤔
Your walks posted here and on other sites are an excellent source of inspiration!!!!
I gather mine on https://les-balades-de-papyness-et-mamyness.be and note that we are both also regularly active in the Vaucluse :-)
See you soon for new discoveries!

You're welcome jacques
I'll be passing through the château on the following hike
https://www.visorando.com/randonnee-bouc...
At any time of year there are only people in that part of the route and sometimes on the heights of the chapel with a view of Echternach.

Looking forward to reading you

Thank you so much, Carla, for suggesting this SPLENDID hike!
A truly wonderful discovery off the beaten track ... everyone meets up in this tourist region around Echternach, usually in the (jungle of) Luxembourg's little Switzerland
We met almost no-one on the walk, apart from a few hundred metres on the Teufelsschlucht site itself. It's usual on our walks to meet almost no-one more than 500 m from the tourist car parks, even on a Sunday!
As usual, we modified the route slightly by changing the starting point (Schloss Weilerbach, in baroque style, is worth a diversion for a look) and consequently increased the distance slightly.
As usual, we didn't use the literary description, which was no help at all, but instead used our own GPS route.

superb hike 2 minutes from Echternach
in this season few people and a beautiful autumnal atmosphere, to avoid Sunday because a place easy of access is a little more attended
a great pleasure as the route is very well signposted
19km40 circuit for us, so good equipment and sure footedness, as the walk is physical but accessible.

Over 16km, we must have passed 15 people.
However, there was one place (at 11km???) where there was a real saturation of tourists, several hundred of them. It was quite unpleasant, but I think it was a one-off during the year and very rare on the route.

There are some really superb rocks and the route, although very physical, is very beautiful overall.

I was mainly familiar with the area around Berdorf, but I have to say that this stretch around the Ernzen plateau is really worth doing.

The Felsenweiher pond is really worth a visit

A truly beautiful forest walk amidst impressive rock formations. Walking sticks are useful and good shoes are necessary. Absolutely avoid flip-flops😂, they won't do.
Incidentally, the route is particularly well signposted. The tourist office website (they're very professional) is the perfect complement to any hiking initiative in the Mullerthal in particular. On the internet, you can see an interactive map showing any restrictions, such as hunting, and links to accommodation, refreshments and places of interest.
I'll certainly be happy to go back.

Do this walk in good weather, sunshine and no rain, as the ground can be slippery.
