The Gizia Cross

A lovely loop on the first slopes of the Jura massif, above the Bresse plain (Revermont). A largely forested route, with viewpoints and panoramas, typical villages, monuments and heritage sites.

Description of the walk

Park in Cuiseaux (Saône-et-Loire), in the car park on the main street (Rue Édouard Vuillard), behind the fountain, next to the Hôtel Vuillot and opposite the Tourist Office.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, on the fountain side, turn left (North) into Rue Édouard-Vuillard and follow it to the large crossroads after the Hôtel de Bourgogne.
Turn right onto Rue des Écoles and follow it to the fork just before the school.

(1) Turn right (North-East) onto Chemin du Pérou, asphalted as far as the retirement home.
Continue straight ahead on the gravel path to the next fork.

(2) Bend right (still North-East) and follow the track, which soon enters the undergrowth and winds its way to a road (D178).
Turn right (East) for approx. 200m, up to the first crossroads.

(3) Leave the road on your left and immediately turn right (East) onto the stony track that climbs up to the village of Chevreaux.

(4) At the entrance to the village, take the 1st street on the left (North), which climbs to the ruins of the castle (free to visit, great view of the Bresse region).

(5) Return to the previous crossroads.

(4) Turn left (East) down Rue du Château, joining the D178.
Continue as far as the crossroads (cross and old fountain) to join the GR® 59, which you follow to the Croix de Gizia lookout (also known as the Chanelet lookout).
Follow the GR®, taking the road to the left (North/North-East) until it bends to the right.

(6) Take the grassy path down to the left (North/North-West) and follow it to the village of Layau.

(7) Go around the church, leaving it on your right, and continue eastwards on the GR®, which soon bends Northwards and then Westwards, joining a small tarmac road.
Go right (North) up to a crossroads marked by an oratory.

(8) Turn right (South-East) onto a small tarmac road and follow it until it bends to the left.
Keep to the right (South/South-East) as the path climbs and, after a few steps, joins the road.
Follow it to the right for a few metres until you come to a cross.

(9) Turn left (North-East) onto the path which climbs steeply along the meadow, then through the undergrowth, to the village of Châtel, almost entirely occupied by a religious institution (including a retirement home).
Cross the village to the (modern) fountain.
Turn left up the road to the Croix de Gizia lookout (shelter, picnic area, viewpoint over the Gizia ravine and the village of the same name).

(10) At the lookout, turn back onto the road (South-West) for 150m.
Leave the GR® and climb to the left (South/South-West) on the wide forest track marked in Yellow.
Follow this path, which winds more or less always south/South-West, first wide, then narrower, then wider again, until, shortly after leaving the forest, you come to a perpendicular path.

(11) Go left downhill to the road.
Cross it in a hairpin bend and continue (South) on the track (you're now back on the GR® 59, which you'll follow as far as a place called 'Marie').
Continue straight ahead until you reach the left-hand bend, then the fork.
Turn right (East/South-East) on the path which climbs towards a telecommunications mast, then right (South/South-West) onto a small tarmac road.

(12) Go right (South/South-West) down the road which passes the Grande Forêt farm (views over the Bresse plain) and heads towards a new telecommunications tower.
Just before the tower, turn left along a grassy track that leads to an orientation table.
Continue Southwards, following the bushes, until you reach the road just before it turns right.

(13) At the bend, leave the road and follow the GR® straight ahead (South) to a crossroads.
Continue right (West) on the GR® to the Yellow signs just before the hamlet of Marie.
Leave the GR® and turn right (North-West) onto a shady path between meadows, which leads to a small tarmac road near the Bois du Bougeon.

(14) Cross the road and go straight ahead (North/North-West) on a track that descends into the forest until it forks (not shown on the map).
Turn right and continue downhill until the track rises again.

(15) Just before this, turn left (West/South-West), downhill, on the stony track which comes up at an angle from the left, to another fork in the road (also not shown on the map).
Continue downhill to the right, until you reach a tarmac road near the Cuiseaux cemetery (chapel). Follow the road to the right.

(16) Cross the rampart through the fortified gate (Porte du Verger) to the fountain.
Turn left to reach a small square. Pass under the arch on the right.
Cross the square, leaving the church and town hall on your right.
Turn right (North) into Rue Saint-Thomas and go to the next crossroads.
Turn left (West) into Rue des Lombards until you reach Rue Édouard Vuillard.
Turn left (South) to reach the starting point in just a few metres(S/E).

Practical information

- Good hiking boots are essential, especially for the final descent, which is quite steep and very rocky. Walking sticks can be very useful.
- There are a few fountains along the way, but none of them are marked as drinkable.
- It's tempting to have a picnic at the Croix de Gizia lookout (shelter, tables, barbecue), but there's still a good half-hour's climb ahead. Weather permitting, it's best to stop only at the summit, when the path narrows, or a little further on, when it widens again. No equipment is required, but the only moment this might come in handy is at the descent at the end of the walk...

In the nearby area

- The Château de Chevreaux is well worth a (short) detour.
- Cuiseaux (in French) is well worth a stroll along its streets (many old houses well restored), or even a visit to the Ecomuseum: information at the Tourist Office opposite the car park.
- La reculée de Gizia

Nice walk 😊
Some pleasant little paths, two less pleasant stretches of road, but the first compensated for by the appearance of a chamois and the other by the panoramic view over the Bresse, so it's not so bad.
We were lucky enough to be able to enter the Château de Chevreau and talk to some volunteers. We would definitely have stayed longer.
Thank you 😀

A very pretty walk, particularly from Cuiseaux to the Gizia cross. The rest of the route, which is very wooded, is nevertheless pleasant, even if the lookout point at Cuiseaux seemed a little abandoned to me. It's a shame, as the view is really worth the effort.

Very nice walk. Note: no hunters!
So we came across a wild boar and, above all, came close to a herd of around twenty chamois!

A very pleasant and varied route... take the time to stop at the Château de Chevreaux, drive quietly through Chatel and take a break at the belvedere!... a little road between Chatel and La Croix but not very long and no cars!...

A fine walk, quite long and challenging.
A few hesitations: in the village of Chevreaux, turn left at the fountain and then straight down into the countryside at the end of the street (6), then "keep" the path on the right at point (8), in fact take the path. Between (10) and (11), there is a crossroads in the forest, turn left. At (15), not very clear, we followed the signs for Marie.

Walk completed in mid-January 2021.
The route is not particularly technically difficult, but was a little slippery in places at this time of year. There were several nice views over the surrounding Bresse plain, whether from the château, the cross or shortly after the old coaching inn. The stretch of road between the hamlet of Chatel and the cross is not very long and does not bother you.
In terms of walking time, apart from a short snack break at the cross and photos at the other viewpoints, it took us around 3h30.

This is an unusual region for us, yet it's only a 1-hour drive away.
Pleasant paths, beautiful viewpoints, pretty villages and sites...
We walked it in the opposite direction to the initial description... which has the advantage of being able to picnic at the Croix de Gizia lookout point, halfway along the route! The small drawback is the steep climb up to Chevreaux.... almost at the end of the route!
Don't hesitate to visit the Châtel park ... access via a small staircase under the church.
