The Croix de Colomban circular loop from Pré à l'Ours

Here is a lovely alternative for exploring the Croix de Colomban on snowshoes, starting from the Col de la Croix Fry, which is very often crowded at weekends. Although not very long, the elevation gain is quite significant and the slope is sometimes quite steep. Certain sections, particularly the crossing of the Nant Bruyant, can be tricky depending on snow conditions or the flow of the stream.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park at Pré à l'Ours, on the road of the same name, taken on the left, on the climb from Manigod towards La Croix Fry.

(S/E) Continue on foot along the same road for about 500 m.

(1) If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to put on your snowshoes and take the path on the left, marked by a yellow arrow on a green square background, indicating the direction of La Croix de Colomban and Les Petites Côtes. The slope quickly becomes quite steep, before levelling off after a sharp left-hand bend, and becoming steeper again as you approach Les Petites Côtes.

(2) Turn right (north-east) towards Les Follières and the Croix de Colomban. The slope alternates with a section across a small plateau before heading off again towards Les Follières.

(3) Continue straight on towards the Colomban reservoir and the Croix de Colomban. At the Colomban reservoir, turn left towards Colomban and the Croix de Colomban.

(4) At the Colomban building, take the path on the left towards the Croix de Colomban, estimated to take five minutes. Reach the summit, where there is a beautiful view of Thônes and the valley towards Les Villards-sur-Thônes.

(5) Head down to the left, following the direction of Pré à l'Ours, via Petit Novard and Les Arces. The slope is quite steep through the pine trees and the path sometimes crosses streams which may have frozen over.

(6) At Les Arces, turn left towards Le Petit Novard and Le Pré à l'Ours. You’ll soon reach Le Nant Bruyant, which can be tricky to cross depending on snow conditions. After crossing it, head back up the opposite side and make your way to Le Petit Novard.

(7) Continue straight on towards Pré à l'Ours (car park via Les Côtes) on the path which descends quite steeply.

(8) Turn sharply left. It then takes just under half an hour to reach the Pré à l'Ours car park (S/E).

A very pleasant, challenging hike with several steep sections (quite soon after setting off). Mainly through forest, with a lovely unobstructed view of the St-Jean de Sixt and Thônes valley once you reach the highest point. The descent can be made by cutting across the mountain pasture (allowing you to hurtle down through the powder, if there is any) and heading for the Colomban d'en bas chalet, then taking the track that cuts south through the forest and leads back to point 7. It took me 3½ hours, with several stops for photos and topography + areas where I had to break trail in the snow.

A beautiful snowshoe hike that offers a nice alternative to the "traditional route" to Colomban.
Much less crowded and with an ascent that offers magnificent views of Charvin and Tournette along the way. Once you reach the Follières area, you can make a short round trip on the frêtes before continuing on to Croix de Colomban.
Thanks for the trail!

A very enjoyable snowshoe hike. Make sure you follow the circular route in the correct direction, as the return leg is steeper than the outward leg
