Circular route starting from Chaucisse

This beautiful walk offers, at both the Croix Stata and the Croix Cartier, a superb panoramic view of the Aravis range to the west and the Mont Blanc range to the east.

The route passes through an area where there is a risk of avalanches. (It is essential to check the stability of the snowpack and the risk of avalanches before setting off.)

Description of the walk

Coming from Saint-Nicolas-la-Chapelle, park at the entrance to the village in the few parking spaces on the right-hand side of the road, just before the first junction.

(S/E) Take the road that climbs to the left and leads to the houses, heading towards Croix Stata.
At thesecond bend at Les Rosets, continue climbing to the left towards Peloset and the Croix Stata.
Continue along the road between the chalets until you reach a very sharp bend.

(1) Here, a warning to exercise caution is clearly signposted and the hiker assumes full responsibility. Turn right onto the slope heading due north, following the track towards Peloset. The climb is moderately steep and fairly steady. After the first 7 hairpin bends, the track climbs in an almost straight line towards the north-west before continuing with a further series of 6 hairpin bends. Finally, the track heads north again to reach Peloset.

(2) Turn 90° to the right towards the Croix de Stata. After about a hundred metres heading south-southeast, it comes into view. The slope becomes steeper as you approach it, and you will then find yourself facing the Mont Blanc massif.

(3) Take care not to approach the ledge. Descend a few metres and head north-east towards the Croix Cartier. The tracks are not all identical but all lead to the junction known as Sous la Croix.

(4) Continue climbing eastwards for about a hundred metres to reach the Croix Cartier and enjoy a 360° panoramic view from here.

(5) Retrace your steps back to the Sous la Croix crossroads.

(4) Turn left towards Les Carrés. Cross the forest on a winding descent down the mountainside. As you emerge from the woods, you will soon reach the Les Carrés crossroads.

(6) Turn 180° to the right, heading due west, onto the track, and you’ll soon reach the junction of route no. 20, marked in purple.

(7) Leave the track and head down to the left across the meadows, following the purple markers. You will then reach the Chaucisse car park (S/E).

As there was no snow at the start, we headed off to the right.
The view from the plateau was superb with the fresh snow.
The view is magnificent: the Aravis, the Mont Blanc massif, the Beaufortin...
A lovely hike.

A lovely hike with views of the Mont Blanc massif all along the route.
Of course, the area is quite busy, despite the lack of snow at the end of December 2023.
A straightforward route; the track is a bit long at the start, but it’s a lovely walk.

A splendid hike, in sunshine from start to finish, even in the middle of December! The description is accurate, and, unlike the summer route, you should indeed follow it in the direction indicated: if there have been no avalanches on the steep, exposed slopes, and in warm weather, turn back, and you’ll have the option of then climbing up to La Croix Cartier, then on to Sata, and back again. On 17 December, the slopes had been cleared, so you have to walk along the avalanche debris. But after that, what a stunning 360-degree view! Two points to note, however: the snow was heavy in spring-like conditions, and it’s a shame that walkers have damaged the track; finally, the start of the descent below La Croix de Cartier is sometimes a bit sloping on spring snow.
