Description of the walk

Take the Route des Fonts de Cervières and park at the junction with the track leading to the Rif Tord chalets.

(S/E) Take this track to reach the Hugues chalets.

(1) Cross the Chemin de l’Aigalans and continue straight on along the track; you’ll soon reach the Rif Tord chalets. Leave the track before the chalets and take the correct path on the right. You’ll reach the sheepfold opposite two small ponds. Stay on the mountain pasture to rejoin the path, then veer slightly left to reach a series of four small ponds.

(2) Join the path once more, continue the very gentle ascent to reach border marker 31-2 at the Col de Bousson.

(3) Continue along this excellent path through the mountain pastures to return to France near marker 33-1. After a very gentle descent, join the Col Chabaud path.

(4) Turn left onto it and follow an almost flat path to reach a makeshift junction (there is no path to the left) just before the Col Chabaud.

(5) Carry on straight ahead, cross the Col Chabaud and re-enter Italy. Continue along this path, always keeping left at the various crossroads. Just before the woodland, find a track on the left leading to the Col Begino.

(6) Turn left (large sign) onto the path leading to Cime Fournier. Pass a military structure and then come across some blockhouse ruins. Continue along the ridge, navigating a few ups and downs, to reach the summit of Cime Fournier with ease.

(7) Head down into the mountain pasture off the beaten track, following the terrain as you go, skirting a dried-up lake before reaching the ‘fictitious’ crossroads mentioned above.

(5) Follow the outward route back to the junction leading to the Col de Bousson.

(4) Continue the descent, initially on a path, then on a wide track used by alpine farmers. Finish the descent at the hamlet of Le Bourget (Cabot).

(8) Turn right onto the wide Chemin de l’Aygalans to return to the crossroads at the hamlet of Les Hugues.

(1) Turn sharply left to reach the nearby car park (S/E).

Notes

Water from the fountains in the hamlets on the plain.
There are none further on.
It is interesting to take a look at the boundary markers.

Worth a visit

The Fonts de Cervières Valley.
Further up the road lies the Col d’Izoard, well known to our cycling friends.

A very pleasant walk with a fairly gentle route (apart from the climb up to the summit). We couldn’t find a path leading down from the summit, so we made our way down by eye. No particular difficulties, and a lovely view from the top. Thank you for sharing.

A lovely hike, offering views of the peaks on the Italian side… The meadows and mountain pastures were absolutely full of flowers when we were there (12 July) – pure bliss… But be careful… There are marmots everywhere!
