West of Clermont-Ferrand, take the D941 to Pontgibaud. Park at Place de la République in the town centre.
(S/E) From the signpost, take the D578 towards Ceyssat. After 200 m, turn left before the post office and go under the railway bridge. At the first road, turn left. At the transformer, continue on the right until you reach the road.
(1) Follow it to the right and, in the bend, take a path opposite. Go through a barrier and enter the solidified lava flow (from the Puy de Côme volcano) between birch and hazel trees.
(2) When you reach a wide sandy path, turn left, go through a second gate and continue until you reach a road.
(3) Take it to the right for 80 m, then turn right onto the road that runs alongside the industrial estate. Return to the solidified lava flow via the first path on the right and go through a gate. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the adjacent paths. At the three-way junction, keep right until you reach the T-junction (stone bench).
(4) Turn left and follow the path to the turning point (ice hole nearby).
(5) Retrace your steps to the fork.
(4) Pass the stone bench and continue for 200 m until you reach the first path on the left.
(2) The return route follows the same path as the outward journey: climb the path through the solidified lava flow and follow it to the barrier. Continue along the dirt track until you reach the road.
(1) 100 m further on, turn left onto the Chemin de la Souche. At the transformer, descend to the left. Take the road on the right and enter the village until you reach the starting point (S/E).
